The Generator Loughborough

The Generator Loughborough The Generator: Restoring Lboro's former Art College into an Inclusive Arts & Culture Centre. Due to open summer '25 Due to open Spring 2025.

Restoring The Generator Hall on Frederick St (part of the Old Art College) as an arts & culture hub for Loughborough. Our original vision was to create a new creative community hub for the public and the creative industries in the four-storey former art college building on Frederick Street. This would be adjoined to a multimedia arts venue in The Generator, on Packe Street. At the time, the team i

ncluded Creative Leicestershire, Charnwood Arts, The Studio at Loughborough University, Love Loughborough BID, and supporters from Charnwood Borough Council. We undertook a feasibility study and formed a Community Interest Company (not-for-profit). We knew we needed substantial funds and that we were in for a long term project. But my goodness, we didn't know quite how long. Over the years the board has evolved, and we have made pragmatic decisions so as to keep the vision alive. We partnered with Grey Goose Ltd, a Loughborough Company, to jointly purchase the building as a whole from the University. The result is that The Generator Loughborough CIC has secured the use of The Generator ( hall and adjoining rooms) for the public, for 999 years. We have a Joint Venture Agreement with Grey Goose Ltd to jointly deliver the overall vision for the whole building and we work closely with their operating arm, Our Neighbourhood. The OAC ( The Old Arts College) is currently open and let to creative businesses and has a thriving coffee shop, Public, on the ground floor. We have nearly secured all the funding required and need just a bit more. The necessary work is mainly structural and although costly will hardly be visible and we will retain the existing character of the wonderful Generator Hall space. We are trying to find a way to make the building safe to open for a limited range of activities on an interim basis while the last bit of funding is secured and the next steps in the renovation are planned. The Generator will be the arts and culture hub that Loughborough so badly wants and needs. We will hold exhibitions, community events and arts events, workshops, performances, conferences and ceremonies. We will welcome all to our arts venue. We just hope it will be soon.

❗️ Important Update ❗️ on the Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend, 14th & 15th September 2024.

Building works at the Generator

Messengers, our building contractor, have hit a problem. They found an oil tank and asbestos under the floor: all of it has to be removed, taking many weeks, and be signed off by the Health and Safety Executive. And yes, it will add substantially to the costs and delay our opening date, and yes we are thoroughly brassed off.

The hugely disappointing upshot for the Open Weekend is that we cannot go into the Generator and run the tours we planned. We are extremely sorry to have to announce this.

We will, however, offer this alternative: meet at Public, the coffee shop next door in the Old Art College. We will display photos and talk about the history, current state, and future plans for the Generator. We will be at the large table with the lamps.

We hope to arrange to peer in through the doors of the Generator, but regret to say that will be the limit of it.

Pasha Kincaid, recently appointed Community Engagement Coordinator, would welcome people with memories and memorabilia about the Generator to come and talk with her.

➡️ If you have already booked a place on the tour with EventBrite, that booking is still valid for this alternative event, so you do not need to re-book.

➡️ If you have not yet booked and want to join the event at Public, please book through the existing EventBrite page so that we have an even spread of visitors during Saturday and Sunday. The link to book is here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-generator-with-loughborough-heritage-open-weekend-tickets-914624555667

➡️ If you have already booked, but feel this is too disappointing, we will understand. You can cancel your booking by following this link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/575010/how-to-cancel-your-free-registration/

We believe that human expression is essential for a healthy society.

We celebrate and support creative people at the heart of our mission.

We believe that creative individuals are the driving force behind the arts, and that the Generator will offer them a new platform to help them thrive.

Our commitment to fostering the talents and aspirations of creative people is fundamental to our role as a dynamic cultural institution, and we look forward to collaborating with and empowering even more artists, creators, and visionaries in the future.

The Generator CIC is particularly aware of Arts Council England's exhortation that arts organisations need to be “Fit for the Future” and the proposals are to kit out the Generator with state-of-the-art digital and physical infrastructure including audio-visual equipment which will allow live streaming of events from the Generator and the showing in the Hall of national cultural performances from the top UK venues.

This is our ambition and forms part of our long term plans. In the short term we will be starting with a basic, but functional, setup.

Construction update. The internal scaffolding has been completed, allowing work on the roof to begin. In addition to refurbishment, the roof is being insulated to improve both thermal and acoustic properties. Preparations are also being made to fit a solar array for electrical generation, which, along with addressing environmental issues, continues the traditional use of the building.

We will be open for Heritage Open Days (14th-15th September), with 10 slots over 2 days available. This will be a rare opportunity to step inside the building site and see the work in progress. Tours at The Generator are free, but you do need to book through Eventbrite:

The Deconstruction of the Ordinary.

Loughborough is getting a brand new Arts and Cultural Centre. We’re transforming part of the old Art School, The Generator, into a vibrant space promoting inclusivity, environmental responsibility, and dynamism.

This exciting project does come with some temporary “industrial symphonies” (as one patron eloquently put it!) next door.

We sincerely apologise for the construction noise, and if it proves overwhelming, please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected] for noise-cancelling options.

The Generator will be an inclusive space for the creative expression of the people of Loughborough and the exploration of all art forms. There will be safe spaces for artists and community arts organisations to engage in participatory arts initiatives. From our research we know that the community, creatives and arts organisations have confirmed the need for space for such activities and strong evidence of need for a variety of arts uses

INTRODUCING our colour palette.

The colour palette selected for our brand guidelines is firmly rooted in the industrial heritage of the building. It reflects both practicality and functionality, each colour chosen reflects elements found within the Generator itself: the stone grey of the concrete floor, the deep black of the Morris Crane winch, the peach hue of discoloured tiles and old piping, and the vibrant acid colour of the warning tape. The brilliant white of vintage wall sockets and the slate grey from the Morris crane girders all find representation as the guidelines colours, which make up the design system comprised of featured, accent or neutral.

While some of these elements are being removed during the renovation of the Generator, they will continue to live on it our brand guidelines, serving as a homage to our heritage.

INTRODUCING the word mark logo.

In the creation of the Generator's wordmark logo, we pay homage to the rich heritage of the building, constructed in the 1930s with an Art Deco style, originally built to provide practical training to engineering students through maintaining diesel generators. The subsequent phase of its existence as Loughborough Art College holds significant historical weight, as it emerged as a nationally renowned institution offering a traditional arts education.

This lineage finds resonance with movements like Bauhaus, whose principles included an emphasis on technology, minimalism and “Form follows function”. Our logo selection echoes these principles embodying simplicity, utility, and adaptability, providing a sturdy yet unobtrusive framework for a large number of diverse projects. It also fuels our guidelines to serve as a vehicle for amplifying the visions of creatives, art orgs, brands and promoters, while also nodding to the building's intrinsic purpose of generating energy both in its historical context and in its contemporary cultural contributions.

INTRODUCING our new logo symbol. This embodies the essence of energy, paying tribute to the building's heritage and the physical energy once created by its iconic diesel generators. It serves as an artistic collage, capturing the raw energy and vibrancy experienced by students and lecturers when The Generator was part of Loughborough Art College.

Now, as the Generator enters its third phase as a cultural centre, the logo symbolises the energy created and shared among creative practitioners, performers and all contributors involved in the centre.

This simple symbol encapsulates the historical legacy, academic vigour, and cultural dynamism of the institution, uniting past, present, and future in a singular emblematic representation.

Our vision extends beyond physical boundaries, embracing tradition and innovation to weave a vibrant cultural landscape. Through planning, collaboration, and inclusivity, we're transforming The Generator into an important centre for creativity and community engagement. Guided by principles of ambition, dynamism, environmental responsibility, and inclusivity, we're on a mission to set new standards of excellence in the arts, inspiring positive change locally and beyond. Together, we're igniting creativity, fostering connections, and shaping a brighter cultural future.

As the building undergoes a transformation, so will our branding. Two days to go before we reveal the new look, and our visions for this space.

The Generator's rich history encompasses engineering, education, art design, and technology. This diverse heritage informs these guidelines, serving as a visual representation of our collective past. As stewards of this historic 1930s Art Deco building based in Loughborough in the heart of England, we recognise our duty to preserve its legacy while propelling cultural innovation.
