The RSPB are asking us to remember the wild birds as the days and nights are getting colder. They suggest putting out bird food and water on a regular basis through autumn and winter and, when the weather is severe, twice daily. Birds need high-energy, high-fat foods during cold weather. Always adjust the quantity given to the demand, and never allow uneaten foods to build up.

We have a fantastic new range of food and feeders at Stubbings.

As the days are forecast to get much colder, you need to protect your tender plants. If you can’t lift or move them into a greenhouse, the best way to protect them from the winter cold and wet is to wrap them up or cover them. We have both mulch and fleece in stock to create a barrier of protection against frost.

Make the most of the autumn days before the winter arrives. Mulch to protect and replenish soil and naturally reduce weeds. Mulching also prevents nutrients being washed away during rain and helpfully reduces the need to dig.

We have a large new area in the garden centre for wildlife. Now that the weather is cooler remember to keep bird feeders topped up. They need more help at this time of year as they use more energy to keep warm. Our new selection of feeders, tables and food from Henry Bell contain the perfect ingredients to keep our little feathered friends nourished.

There is something so rewarding about picking your own fruit. Plant raspberries (and other soft fruit canes) in the ground now for fruit next summer. Smaller fruit varieties can also grow well in large pots in a sunny, sheltered spot. We have some very interesting varieties in stock including Honeyberry (similar to a blueberry), Jostaberry (a hybrid of blackcurrant & gooseberry) and Gojiberry (one of the most powerful nutritional and anti-ageing foods). We also have the traditional British varieties such as blackberries, raspberries, black and redcurrants and more available to buy and plant now.

The neat, trimmed English Boxwood (Buxus) has been one of our favourite garden plants in the UK for centuries but recently we have been struggling with box blight and box tree caterpillar. At Stubbings, we now stock a great alternative, Ilex Crenata (AKA Japanese Holly) which, in many ways, is a superior plant. It is low maintenance, slow-growing and perfect for topiary and low growing hedges. It is robust, versatile, hardy and easy to grow and not prone to the problems that occur with Buxus. Pop in or call to speak to our knowledgeable team on where to plant and how to care for this and other plants.

Have you heard of lasagne bulb planting? It is basically a way to layer bulbs (like lasagne layers) in a pot so that you have a long lasting display throughout spring & summer. This is how you do it:
1) Get a deep pot with drainage holes and add a layer of compost
2) Place the biggest, latest-flowering bulbs on top (e.g. tulips)
3) Cover with another layer of compost & repeat with a layer of smaller, earlier flowering bulbs (e.g. daffodils). Leave space to allow bulbs below to grow through.
3) If your pot is deep enough, you can add a third layer
4) Add winter bedding on top if you like (e.g. violas)
5) Water and wait for spring. Do not eat!

We have some wonderful loose Spring-flowering bulbs to plant now whilst the soil is still warm. This helps the roots develop and become established before winter. You can plant spring bulbs directly into borders or pots. We recommend planting bulbs at a depth of around three times their size. We have some great tools including long handle bulb planters. Spring bulbs generally need sun or partial shade and free-draining soil but please feel free to ask our knowledgeable staff when you visit.

There is one week left until our Country Car Boot and Local Producers Market and we can’t wait. Have you booked your space yet?

Here are some top tips for successful car booting:

Tip #1 – Get here on time. You can set up from 8am but remember buyers will be queuing to get in from 9am.
Tip #2 – Don’t price your items. It is generally agreed amongst car boot experts that it’s best to not price your items as you may want to change your prices throughout the day and encourage bartering.
Tip #3 – Bring carrier bags to make purchase decisions easier. You never know, they might just buy another item too.
Tip #4 – Prepare a float - Car boot sales rely on cash transactions so it’s important to make sure you have a float with you so you can give change for purchases made using notes.
Tip #5 – Pack the car strategically the night before with your tables on top so they are easily accessible and you can begin setting up your stall straight away.
Tip #6 – Bring a friend to help you out. They will keep you company and hold the stall if you want to grab a coffee from the Stubbings café
Tip #7 – Present your items well and in good condition. Clean any items that might be dirty or dusty!
Tip #8 – Price realistically. People are looking for a bargain and a rough guide is 10-15% of the original value. Obviously, this depends on the condition of the item but don’t expect huge numbers from individual items.
Tip #9 – See what you can and can’t sell by visiting the Stubbings website and checking out the Car boot terms and conditions.

Sweet and juicy fruits are now in stock at Stubbings. They are easy to grow and so rewarding with fresh fruit to pick from your own garden. Plus, the good news is that you don't need an orchard or greenhouse. Fruit canes can fit in your borders and thrive in containers too. Many fruit bushes also love growing up against a sunny wall or fence.

Plan now for next year's Spring-time with our gorgeous bulbs. They're one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants to grow. Preferably plant spring-flowering bulbs, such as daffodils , crocus and hyacinths by the end of September, tulips in November and hardy summer-flowering bulbs, such as lilies, alliums and crocosmia in September and October.
