Been a bit quiet after the hustle of the John Piper exhibition. I think the long period with no breaks has taken its toll. We had to close one day this week because of staff illness. Apologies to anyone who was disappointed on Wednesday.
As our regulars will know, I had a back op recently and started therapy this week. I am sure I will be much better soon but, at the moment, it's a bit sore.
So...........we are open today serving this delicious apricot and frangipane cake amongst other yummy sweet treats and - of course - our savoury muffins, scones and cheeseboard.
BUT, we will be closed tomorrow, Saturday, so that we can have a long weekend of rest to return refreshed and reinvigorated for next week. Which will be busy.
On Thursday, we have our monthly Classic Car meet up which I will post about later. Wow, were there some cracking vehicles last time.
Then, next weekend, we will be starting our Saturday 'Afternoon Delight' events involving music and bottomless brunches. More details to come.
Have a great Bank Holiday. Pop in today for cake and coffee before you head off on holiday. The Loose Box Cafe is open from 9:30 until 3pm.

The Loose Box Cafe, Barton Court, Colwall, WR13 6HN getting ready for summer! Open today, Thursday 9th, from 9:30 to 3pm.

It was hot on Tuesday so I didn't make soup. Everyone who came in for lunch asked for soup. I made soup yesterday and no one asked for it! The changeable weather makes planning a menu very tricky.
So...........today I am focussing on cake. Burnt basque cheesecake is back by popular demand and is perfect to eat whatever the weather.

'Rain for the next hour' says the weather app I am growing to hate. Starting to think we will never have another dry day.
To combat the gloom, I prescribe cake and chocolate. These cinnamon swirls are served warm and we give you a knife and fork to eat them with because they are so huge. Our new chocolate melts are bowls full of happiness: ruby, dark, milk and - if you are trying to limit your sugar - sugar free.
The Loose Box Cafe is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 until 3pm EXCEPT for this coming Saturday when we are closed.

The Loose Box Cafe, Barton Court, Colwall, WR13 6HN. Open from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 until 3pm for breakfast, brunch, light lunch, great coffee and wonderful cakes.
PS. We now have sugar free hot chocolate made from chocolate flakes. It's dairy free and gluten free, too.

I put this cake on display yesterday afternoon not expecting it to sell very well. It is plain: no piping, no garnish, dark brown on the outside. It looks burnt. It IS burnt. I ordered it because I like to support our bakers' creativity. Plus, when I tasted a sample, it was delicious: sweet but not too sweet with a wonderfully squishy texture. James agreed - loved it more than I did even - but said our customers were not ready for burnt cake.
Turns out our customers are pretty discerning. They loved it, too. So much that several of them took a piece home.
If you would like to try a slice of baking heaven, best get down to us quickly. The Loose Box Cafe is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30am until 3pm for a moan about the weather [rained again in the night!] and some yummy treats.

PS. It is supposed to be burnt. That is a fine layer of caramelisation on the outside.

On the menu today in the Loose Box Cafe.

Bavette steak is known as the 'butcher's cut' because, allegedly, they kept it for themselves, it is so tasty. It is loosely textured and has lots of marbling which makes it juicy and tasty.
Luckily for you, our supplier, Knightwick Butchers , is happy to share so we have some on the menu.
We marinade the steaks and chargrill them before putting them in ciabatta rolls with caramelised onions. Served with Two Farmers crisps and a garden salad. Great lunch. Or, with fresh free range eggs for breakfast. All local produce.

Do you like good music?

Yeah, yeah!

Well, brace yourselves because we have some ace bands booked to entertain you in the Dutch Barn.

One of the first up is local faves, The Helix Gold Band. On 27th April from 7pm, you can listen to the cracking voice of the lovely lead singer - the lady in red [below] - well supported by the rest of the band, in the comfort of the Dutch Barn, while enjoying some tasty food and decent booze.

What do you think we should major on drinks wise? - we want to get it right for you music lovers. Cocktails? Cider? Or shall we have a selection of [almost] local DEYA Brewing Company beers? Being ex Cheltonians, we love their beers.

Let me know in the comments, what your favourite tipple would be and we will see what we can do.

But, above all, make sure you come and support a local band. it's tough being a musician these days and what would the world be like without music?

Calling all lovers of 50s art!

We are pleased and proud to be the venue chosen for the 10th anniversary of the Fifties Art and Design collection of John Piper's work.

The exhibition starts on Friday 10th May at 6pm with a private view. If you would like to be on the list, please get in touch with me or Richard Turkington, the curator, by email: [email protected]. The exhibition runs for 10 days so plenty of time to enjoy.

This is a rich and fascinating exhibition of an explosion of post war talent that subverted the notion of 'art'.

Isn't this fabulous? It is the subject of tomorrow's [Thursday 29th Feb] talk when the Classic Car Club gathers for its regular monthly meet up.

This friendly group has been getting together on the LAST THURSDAY of every month for nearly two years. Our anniversary will be next month! Originally, it was planned as a summer event lasting most of the day, giving pretrol heads and car enthusiasts the opportunity to meet and chat in convivial surroundings. It became so popular that it has continued throughout the winter months.

In the dark season, the meetings are held inside, in the warm, and consist of talks and quizzes on car related themes. The winter meets last just a couple of hours but are, nevertheless, very well attended.

You don't have to own a vintage Rolls Royce to come along. This is a non judgmental group made up of real enthusiasts so anyone is welcome.

If you would like to join the mailing list, message me with your email address and I will add you in. Otherwise, just pitch up tomorrow and marvel at beauty in motion.

Quick update on the ideas that you kindly put forward last week.

1. We are delighted to announce that The Helix Gold Band will be playing here on 27th April in the Dutch Barn. We are just working out the final details about food etc and we will be releasing tickets in the week.

2. We had a visit from the Rare Plant Fair organisers and we hope to be included in their programme for next year. HOWEVER, they are open to do a mini fair here - with a talk - if enough people are interested. Could you plant lovers message me if this is something you would enjoy and we will see what these nice people can do?

3. In discussion with Cinema For All to arrange for 'dinner and a movie' nights. Should have something in the diary very soon. To kickoff, what kind of film would you like to watch? Shall we go for an. oldie but goldie; new and controversial; fun or serious?

4. I gather that there may be an appetite for a mum's afternoon out with tea and a screening. We are trying to work out the logistics for that.

5. The menu in the cafe is expanding slowly BUT we have to be mindful of waste so the selection of hot meals is limited.

So.....we are doing our best to give you what you want. Don't forget our current activities are still going strong with extra Pilates classes and Classic Cars coming up next week.

Our new menu is building up. Yesterday, we launched winter spice cake. This is a slice of moist, fragrant yumminess filled with winter fruits and topped with frosting and cranberries. Given a big thumbs up by everyone, itis actually VEGAN. [We are always looking for new vegan, vegetarian and GF treats that are delicious].

Today, we are expanding the soup menu and adding in some pasta dishes for light lunches. We came across a fab small batch baker who makes savoury scones and muffins. Yum. Much more interesting that a roll.

Also, - again with our vegan and vegetarian friends in mind - we have a truffled mushroom croissant. Don't ask me how she makes the flaky pastry and bechamel sauce so tasty when there is no dairy involved but she does. Magic.

We are open from 9:30 until 3pm. Pop in and see us.

There were some great suggestions put forward yesterday and we are following up on all of them.

How would you feel about dinner and a movie? We have long since wanted to screen films [we are part of Cinema For All] but have been put off by the problem of finding comfy seating for a decent number of people that could then be stored.

BUT........I had a lightbulb moment. We have lots of comfy chairs in the main reception room of the house.

So. Would a screening in the drawing room, followed [or preceded] by a 2/3 course supper in the dining room and perhaps a drink and a chat about the film after?

Does that sounds fun?
