We're signing off for the week with this wonderful Monastery moment, when Paul visited us to take a trip down memory lane, and play our very recently installed, Victorian Wadsworth organ, on his 77th birthday - he played so beautifully, one or two of us were actually welling up... 🎵 🥲 🎶
Paul and his family have deep roots with the Monastery, since his grandparents were married here, many moons ago. Not only that, Paul & his family donated very generously towards our organ appeal, directly helping us to restore the Monastery's missing Wadsworth organ - and we are are so grateful to all of them 🙏
Right now, the music is being amplified electronically, but soon, during September and October, we'll be getting over 1000, original, Victorian pipes installed into the organ loft, so the Monastery organ will finally resonate acoustically once more throughout the vastness of the Great Nave. We can barely contain our anticipation!
Since we started fundraising, almost 3 years ago, we've raised over £75,000. Our target is £100,000, so we're almost exactly three quarters of the way there!
We're in the home straight now, and pulling out all the stops to rasie the remainder of the cash we need to bring authentic, Victorian music back home to Gorton Monastery and keep our precious local history & heritage alive for future generations.

Good morning ✨ today we are absolutely delighted to announce that after years of fundraising, our new Wadsworth organ console has now been built and installed in the Great Nave! It's been 35 years since the original organ was played for the last time, (by Stephen Mann) before being stripped from the Monastery and sold for scrap, by the property developers who bought the building from the Franciscans in the 1980s.
We'd like to thank each and every one of you who has donated to our organ restoration fund over the past few years, helping us to restore a unique piece of Manchester musical history here in Gorton 🙏 🙏 🙏 - just look what you did! 😍
The organ can already be played electronically (and it sounds absolutely amazing!) but the Monastery Trust is still fundraising to raise the final £40,000 we need to reinstall all 1000 original Victorian pipes into the organ loft, so the organ can be played traditionally once more, in complete resonance with the Monastery architecture, just as E.W. Pugin designed it to do, back in 1866.

Yoga Synergy is a very gentle form of movement and is taught every Thursday, 1-2pm, at the Monastery, by highly accomplished yogi, Stef, in our beautiful, pyramid shaped studio.
This is not the type of yoga that requires contortion into difficult postures and as such, this relaxed and friendly class is suitable for all levels, including absolute beginners.
