The Salford Quays Operations Tower
1993.

The post modern touches such as the faux Port holes and bright blue paintwork add to the nautical air of this little building.

The tower controls the mechanised lock into Dock 8, as well as providing facilities to the boating community such as fresh water and effluent disposal.

Architectural City Guide - Manchester

£15

You would expect that a group based in Manchester, interested in modernist buildings, would have a pocket guide to its best modernist buildings wouldn't you?

Well up until now, much to our chagrin, we didn't have one. It seems like an obvious thing for us to do and yet we had never made one. That is until now!

We present the first in a series of Architectural City Guides - Sheffield and Birmingham are planned for later this year.

Manchester is our home town so we are starting here. There are 41 sites to visit, each with a short description, photograph and factual information. We have included a handy map if you are not familiar with the city.

Spanning 100 years of architecture this is perfect for those who want to get to know the Modern architectural heritage of Manchester - be you a visitor from afar, or a local who wants to refamiliarise yourself with the city.

Perfectly sized - small enough to fit in your anorak pocket but bigger than your mobile phone screen.

The Whitworth: its interior was transformed in 1967 by Bickerdike, Allen and Partners into a bold, Scandinavian style space. Still one of the best in the city.

What other interiors should we be investigating?

So, what do we know about this building?
Just behind the Shudehill transport interchange, it's certainly part of the Co-operative estate. It is probably from the 1950s/60s. It's got some nice details in its brickwork.
But apart from that, we don't know much more ... do you?

Invisible Cities: Salford before, during and after redevelopment 1952-1974

Edited by Tanya Poppelreuter and Alexandra Mitchel

This book focuses on the transformation of Salford between 1952 and 1974, when terraced houses and neighbourhoods were being replaced with modern architecture.

The book (and exhibition ) is the culmination of The Modern Backdrop, a two-year research project at the University of Salford. We were kindly asked to publish the book to accompany the exhibition and we think its a lovely thing.

The book and exhibition consists of photographs and architectural renderings - alongside oral histories from Salford residents past and present . Photographs were supplied by professional and semi professional photographs plus many were sent in by members of public who lived in and around Salford during its redevelopment.

Combined they have created an evocative and thought provoking set of images and words. This will appeal to those interested in the recent history of Salford, urban redevelopment and social history with an element of nostalgia thrown in.

This is a wonderful record of a pivotal stage of Salford's past.
