‘The National’ are an Indie-Rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s core members consist of Matt Berninger (vocals), twin brothers Aaron Dessner (guitar, piano, keyboards) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano, keyboards), as well as brothers Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). For their dynamic performance in Manchester last Thursday, they were joined by their staple touring session musicians Ben Lanz (trombone, synthesizers) and Kyle Resnick (trumpet, keyboards, backing vocals).
Castlefield Bowl, with its industrial charm and open-air setup, provided the perfect backdrop for The National’s poignant and atmospheric sound. The venue, nestled in the heart of Manchester, buzzed with anticipation as fans, both old and new, gathered for what promised to be a memorable night. The weather played its part too, with clear skies and a gentle breeze making for an ideal summer evening concert.
The band took the stage to the tune of classic American new wave anthem “Life During Wartime.”
Suitably, frontman Matt Berninger showed an animated, interactive style of frontmanship that was reminiscent of ‘Talking Heads’ Frontman David Byrne. His ability to connect with the audience was palpable, drawing everyone into the raw emotion and storytelling that characterises The National’s music. Fundamental to his sound was his distinctive baritone voice that had undertones of an early Nick Cave. The showmanship was not exclusive to singer Beringer, with Twin Dessner Brothers showing exciting interaction with the crowd. Reverb heavy, ethereal guitar tones echoed through the Castlefield Bowl that featured a tasteful amount of distortion that filled out this eclectic group of instruments in a unique way.
Interaction between instruments is fundamental to the national’s sound, with many question and answer style melodies being played between the lead and rhythm guitar, likewise with the guitar and piano. The synergy between the band members was also evident in

On a wet and cold Wednesday night in Manchester, the team at Manchester One Media went down to Victoria Warehouse to see the power house that is McFly The venue was full to the brim as the band took to the stage and opened with ‘Where Did All The Guitars Go’ to kickstart the night with an energetic number. They kept the crowd captivated and engaged throughout the set and even involved crowd member, Stacey, by inviting her onto the stage. Stacey was assigned to playing the cowbell for ‘Everybody Knows’ and did not disappoint.McFly continued to entertain Victoria Warehouse until Danny and Tom played 2 stripped back songs. They played ‘Not Alone’ and a sensational version of ‘It’s All About You’.Danny then entered the crowd to play ‘the lost song’ “Red” which erupted the room with electrifying riffs and then returned to the stage to instruct the crowd to get down on the floor and jump for the final chorus - a moment to remember.The stage entered full blackout before the band returned to the stage for the encore where they played hits from their latest album, ‘Forever’s Not Enough’ and the sing along ballad, ‘Honey I’m Home’.The final song in the set was obviously (if you pardon the pun) their biggest hit, ‘5 Colours in Her Hair’.
