🪴Houseplant tips for winter🪴

In late autumn, with lower light levels, many house plants prepare for the dormant phase to survive the potentially harsh winter ahead. It's essential to let your plants rest during this period. By following our winter care tips, you'll ensure your house plants remain healthy and are ready to thrive come spring 🪴🌿
o Dormant plants need very little water. Too much and they'll either produce soft or weak growth or will rot as water accumulates in the compost. For most house plants, reduce the watering to once every fortnight. For succulents and cacti, only water every 2-3 weeks.
o With shorter days and reduced sunlight in winter, it's crucial to optimize light exposure for your plants. Placing them in a sunny conservatory or porch where they can receive light from multiple directions or a west or south facing windowsill is best.
o Indoor plants, such as snake plants, often accumulate a thick layer of household dust on their leaves. This reduces the amount of light, making it harder for them to manufacture food. Wipe off dust regularly using a damp cloth.
o Most house plants need a temperature of 12-18°C. They dislike large temperature fluctuations, so position them away from cold draughts and open windows or doors. Also, keep plants away from radiators and fireplaces, which can scorch leaves.
o A nice cozy house provides the perfect environment for many plant pests like aphids, scale insects, thrips and mealybugs to thrive and breed over the winter. Check all your plants thoroughly for pests regularly, looking under the leaves and as well as on top. Isolate any plants with potential pests to avoid cross contamination 🌱

💐Fresh flower tips for winter💐

Fresh flowers need a little TLC any time of the year. But, with the colder weather drawing in, if it’s cold outside, don’t worry! Here are some tips on how to make your flowers last longer, despite the chill❄️

o Tap water is especially cold in winter. To avoid shocking your flower stems, warm the water to room temperature before using it. Change the water every 2-3 days to prevent bacteria growth and to extend the life of your flowers
o Fresh flowers thrive best in a home with a consistent temperature. Sudden temperature changes and drafts can cause flowers to wilt more quickly. Aim to maintain a steady, comfortable temperature of 18-19°C to keep your flowers looking their best.
o Central heating isn’t a friend to your flowers! The dry heat can speed up wilting. Keep them away from radiators and appliances that generate heat.
o The windows are the chilliest spots in your home. If your bouquet is near a window, make sure the foliage or flowers don’t touch the glass, as the cold can cause them to wilt overnight.
o No matter the season, if you want your flowers to stay fresh as long as possible, it’s important to cut the stems at a 45-degree angle before arranging them in the vase and each time you change the water. Be sure to remove any leaves below the waterline and dispose of any dying flowers as soon as you spot them.
