***HOUSEPLANT WORKSHOPS & more***

Our new schedule of workshops is out and we are looking forward to welcoming you all to our gorgeous shop to learn more about caring for your houseplants or maybe enjoying a relaxing, creative time exploring a new craft.

If you would like to learn more about how to keep your houseplants happy and healthy then our Enjoy your Houseplants session (Tues 10/09 & Thurs 31/10) might be for you. You'll find out just what your plants need and leave with a new found confidence in your plant skills. If you're ready for something a bit more advanced we gave Professor Jeff Ollerton coming to talk about Tropicals as Houseplants (Fri 25/10).

We will be building gorgeous Terrarium gardens (Thurs 19/09 & Tues 24/09) and open bowl Succulent Gardens (Thurs 24/10).

We have added to our workshops and are delighted to welcome Sally from who will lead us through making a Macrame plant hanger (Tues 15/10 - afternoon & evening sessions & Sat 09/11). We also have Caroline from introducing us to punch needling or 'colouring with yarn' (Mon 07/10, morning).

You'd already know this if you were signed up for our newsletter; you can subscribe via the page on our website (link in bio). Our website is also where you need to go to find out more or book any of these workshops. If you would like to buy a workshop from someone as a gift (great idea!) just message us or pop into the shop for a workshop gift voucher.

***OPENING TIMES***

Wonderful Plant Friends: our usual opening times are Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 11am to 3pm. However for this week only we shall be CLOSED on Saturday and Sunday - that's 20th & 21st July, as Mr windowsill and I are taking a short break to go and see the Diamond League Athletics in London. It's always a tricky decision to close at the weekend, but sometimes I need a break. I hope you all understand. Additionally, I will not be checking emails of socials from Friday 5pm to Tuesday 12pm.

We will be OPEN as usual on Thursday and Friday, so if you have any important plant essentials (birthday presents, treats for yourself, soil for re-potting) you will need to get into the shop between 10am and 5pm on Thursday 18th or Friday 19th.

***CARNIVOROUS PLANTS***

I don't often have these but this week I've succumbed to popular demand and got some cute little (8cm) pots of Venus Fly Traps (Dionaea muscipula) and Pitcher Plants (Sarracenia).

These plants like to be kept pretty damp and it's important to use rainwater or filtered water, so as not to upset their delicate nature. You might enjoy feeding them the occasional fly/insect but don't be tempted to trigger the traps; if they close without a yummy nutritious fly the plant cannot sustain itself.

We're OPEN Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 3pm.

It's one of our favourite days of the year when we take this houseplant show on the road and set up at Leicester Botanic Gardens. It's their Open Day (10am to 5pm) and the Gardens are packed with lots of outdoor plant sellers and interesting stands. We're already made friends with . It's a great day out (£5per adult, children free) - pop by and say hello.

***GORGEOUS NEW PLANTS***

It feels like ages since we did a carousel of photos of our latest plant selection - and now looking at the terrible photography I can see why. It's hard to do justice to these beautiful houseplants so you might want to pop down to the shop to see these for yourselves. All our plants are sourced for quality, so you can be assured that you are taking the best plants home.

THIS WEEK: we have two varieties of Alocasia - Tiny Dancer and Zebrina, both stunning statement plants in their own right. There are a few different colours of Agolemena (pinks and silver and white), lots of bouncy trailing pothos (Brasil, golden, aureum) and the show-stopping Aeschynanthus marmoratus. Ask in store for full placement and care advice to keep your new plant friend happy and growing.

We are OPEN:
🪴 Thursday 10am to 5pm
🪴 Friday 10am to 5pm
🪴 Saturday 10am to 5pm
🪴 Sunday 11am to 3pm

FIND US: in the Old Fire Station, Abbey Street, Market Harborough, just off the High Street.

***WHAT I DID ON MY HOLIDAYS***

Thank you for your patience last week whilst I was away doing non-house plant related things. I spent 8 days walking the West Highland Way (96 miles from north of Glasgow to Fort William) with lovely Heather . The scenery was stunning, helped by great weather and brilliant trail camaraderie. The walking was good, sometimes tough and sometimes a bit further than I hoped but I finished with a wonderful sense of achievement. Sadly my left boot didn't quite make it through the last day.

I'm looking forward to getting back to the shop and we will be open as usual from tomorrow. We have a massive plant drop with loads of gorgeous new plants, so will be fully stocked. Pop in to chat about houseplants or commiserate the loss of my walking boots.

***HOLIDAY***

Plant friends: I just need to let you know that the shop is closed this week, as I am taking a short break. Apologies if you DESPERATELY NEED a plant before next week. Try to hold on until Thursday 16/05, when we will be back with lots of gorgeous new stock.

This is an opportune time to remind you not to panic about leaving your houseplants when you go away. Give them a good water before you go away, maybe group them together in a cooler, shadier room (not your cactus, they don't care about being left alone) and they will be fine for a couple of weeks. It's probably safer than getting overwatered by your well meaning neighbour.

***OPENING TIMES THIS WEEK***

Just a heads up that we have some changes to opening this week. Our gorgeous shop is full of beautiful houseplants and OPEN as usual from 10am to 5pm on Thursday. On Friday, which is a bank holiday, we are closing a little early at 3pm. Then it's back to normal on Saturday. We're giving ourselves time off and will be closed on Sunday and will not be open on Monday (we don't usually, so hopefully not too much of a disturbance for you).

We look forward to seeing you for houseplant choosing, pot matching, houseplant-saving chat, re-potting assistance and so much more.

***BEAUTIFUL HOUSEPLANTS***

Here at windowsill HQ we love a hanging plant and always have some gorgeous choices for you. There are bonus points if the plant is a bit weird (hello Hildewintera colademonis), has flowers (yes, we see you Aeschyanthus Mona Lisa) or just exuberantly beautiful (like this Tradescantia flumiensis). Just to warn you that we're s bit protective of our plant friends and will make you promise to love them - and put them in the right light, before we let you take them home.

We're OPEN Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Find us just off the High Street in Abbey Street, Market Harborough. You can't miss our wonderful shop in the stunning Old Fire Station.

***RE-POTTING***

It feels like Spring has arrived - it’s a bit warmer and lighter outside and this seems to have prompted many of you to think about giving your houseplants some loving attention. In theory you can re-pot your houseplants at any time of the year but I like to follow some pattern of seasonality and we are therefore reaching that point in the year when I would suggest giving your houseplants a check over to identify if any would benefit from a re-pot, giving them a boost at the start of the growing season.

How, you might ask, can you tell if your plant friend needs re-potting? Why is there a bunch of different soils and how do you know which to use? Where do you start with a prickly cactus? I answer all these questions and more in our Re-potting workshop; we will also inevitably end up talking about watering too. These sessions are very informal and we do not expect you to be houseplant experts to take part and there is never any judgement on your abilities - we hope you will leave more confident to successfully tackle your collection. We have two dates scheduled for the Re-potting workshops over the next month or so: Thursday 28th March and Tuesday 23rd April - both are evening sessions from 6.00-8.00pm. You can book in-store or through our website (link in bio).

We also offer a Re-potting service, where we can do the dirty work for you. Just contact us for more information.

***WORKSHOPS***

Our new programme of workshops is LIVE and we hope there's something for everyone. All sessions are held in our gorgeous shop in Abbey Street, Market Harborough, where you'll be surrounded by beautiful houseplants for that extra bit of inspiration. Don't be shy - if you're on your own you'll receive a warm welcome and we keep everything relaxed. Bring a friend, your partner or your mum and have a brilliant evening out, as well as learning something.

Our "Enjoy your Houseplants" is a perfect introduction to being successful with houseplants. It's been described as "life-changing", which is only a slight exaggeration.

Spring is the perfect time to think about re-potting your houseplants and our Re-potting workshop will fill you with knowledge and confidence to tackle this yourself.

For something a bit more hands-on why not book onto our Terrarium building or Kokodama wrapping workshops. We provide everything you need to complete the project, along with expert guidance to help you on your way.

Whichever workshop you choose, you can book via our website (link in bio) or in store. If you would like to give any of our workshops as a gift we can organise a Workshop Experience Voucher - just message or email us or pop into the shop to arrange this.

***CLOSED THIS WEEK***

Sorry, I meant to give you more notice. Mr windowsill and I are going on a short break to Berlin and so the shop will be closed. I probably won't be looking at messages or emails either.

We will be back next week and will be OPEN on Thursday 07th March, Friday 08th March and Saturday 09th March from 10am to 5pm AND Sunday 10th March from 11am to 3pm. It's International Women's Day, so you might want to think what the International Women in your life might like.

***ASPIDISTRA***

Plant trends come and go but sometimes an old favourite reminds you why it was popular in the first place. We've got some nice Aspidistra eliatior (in 14cm pots, standing over 50cm in height) and they really are a lovely plant: with long, elegant, dark green leaves and a graceful fanning shape.

These were all the rage in Victorian and Edwardian times, when they gained the nickname of being the Cast Iron Plant, due to their extremely robust constitution. Aspidistras really do thrive on neglect - they are perfectly happy in low light positions and cooler conditions and need very little/ infrequent waterings.

Why not pop into the shop and start your heirloom plant collection with a beautiful Aspidistra. Other plants are available (Clivia miniata anyone?). We are open both days this weekend: Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 11am to 3pm.

We've got beautiful houseplants to make anyone happy, stylish pots and gorgeous accessories. We can also print out a voucher for any of our workshops.

It'll be back to normal opening times for the rest of the month: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 11am to 3pm.

***QUALITY HOUSEPLANTS, QUALITY ADVICE***

We've got some great plants in stock, as always. There's a massive ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamifolia if you want to get technical about it) and some sweet little pots of the same, if you need a shelf filler. We've also got a selection of flamboyant Calathea at 80cm tall for a statement plant, somewhere away from direct sun.

Of course these are just a couple of highlights, the shop is full of beautiful houseplants to make you happy and more importantly we've also got the right advice and information to help you choose the right plant for your space and understand how to keep it healthy. There's a reason why we have customers returning time after time - because they know they can trust us to supply quality plants that last and our specialist knowledge sets us apart.

We are now open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am until 5pm and back open on Sundays from 11am to 3pm. Looking forward to seeing you all at The Old Fire Station, Abbey Street, Market Harborough.

***EXTRAS***

It's not just about plant buying at windowsill - we've got lots of extras to keep you busy.

THIS WEEK: there are still spaces on our life-changing "Enjoy your Houseplants" workshop, which is running on Thursday evening. This is the session for you if you think you can't keep houseplants. Book in store or via the website. Then on Sunday we are opening for our first Pre-loved houseplant sale - this is your chance to rescue a beautiful plant that needs a new home.

Into February we have our brilliant friend running a tiny house building ceramic workshop on Thursday 08/02 (book directly with Ellie). Then it's back to plants with Terrarium building on 15/02 and Repotting workshop on 22/02.

You see, for us houseplants aren't so much a casual decorative purchase, so much a whole way of life. You don't have be be obsessed to enjoy them just a little bit more, but you're only one step away from joining us in Houseplant Club.

***PRE-LOVED HOUSEPLANTS***

It's a thing we just invented!

Earlier this year one of our lovely Houseplant Club friends contacted us about re-homing some of her houseplants; she has very recently adopted a kitten and unfortunately some of her much loved houseplants are unsuitable to keep around (some plants can be toxic to pets). Rather than throw away these plants we thought there must be people out there who might like to re-home them.

We'll be opening on Sunday 28/01/25, 11am to 3pm especially for some pre-loved plant shopping. It will be our first Sunday opening of the year and it would be great to start off with a busy day, so drop and see what bargains you can find.

If you have any plants that you have fallen out of love with or which have outgrown their space just message us here this week to arrange to drop them off for this sale. All plants should be in good condition and with no pests please!

***ENJOY YOUR HOUSEPLANTS***

DO you love houseplants, but struggle to keep them healthy? Would you like to get more plants, but worry they'll take up too much time? Would you like to understand better what your plant friends need to keep them happy? Our brilliant "Enjoy your Houseplants" workshop might be the answer.

Join Susie in our gorgeous shop for an evening of life changing information and learning about houseplant care. We will explain what your houseplants really need to grow and thrive and why positioning is so important - and yes, we'll talk about watering.

The workshop will run on the evening of Thursday 25th January, 6.00-8.00pm. Bring along a friend and pictures of your jungle - we love to chat real life plant examples. Cost is £20pp and you can book in store, by messaging me or on the website (link in bio). We also do Gift Vouchers for all our courses if you want to buy this as a present.

***TERRARIUMS***

Or should that be "terraria"? For those of you who got terrarium kits at Christmas we have a lovely selection of teeny tiny plants (6cm pots), chosen to do well in a terrarium. There are ferns, beautiful leafy plants and some fabulous textures to play around with.

For those of you who didn't get a terrarium kit, we are running a terrarium building workshop on Thursday 15/02/24. Enjoy a relaxed evening in our gorgeous shop and we'll provide everything you need to make a brilliant self contained plant garden. You can book via our website (link in bio) or pop into the shop for more information. You can also book this (and any of our workshops) as a gift and we will print out a Gift Voucher - ask in the shop or message us here.

We are open at the Old Fire Station, Abbey Street, Market Harborough on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

***BEAUTIFUL PLANT FRIENDS***

As we say goodbye to 2023, I want to thank you for your support this past year. Everyone of you that's walked through the door, all your kind words and especially every purchase, those of you who attended one of my workshops, all the folk who listened to my talks to WI's and Gardening Clubs, those of you who liked and commented on my posts, those of you who told others where to find me, those who trusted me to choose and deliver plants to your special people - it's hard work running a tiny business and sometimes things are difficult but I've made it through with your help.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank a few special folk who have always got my back - Varsha & Kirit at , Alison and all the Goats , Laura & Stacey at .co & .living, Jodie , Heather for taking me for walks and my magical Shop Elf, Agnieszka . Of course, none of this would be possible without Mr windowsill and my brilliant family; I am the luckiest plant shop owner in the world.

I've got big plans for 2024, which I will tell you all about next week - until then enjoy this picture of my spectacular Focus elastica, which I rescued from the closed restaurant across the road.

Houseplant Shop in Market Harborough Indoor Market

There’s something about houseplants. They can make a space feel homely, stylish, fresh and grounded. There’s even NASA research which concludes that plants can improve air quality and make our homes and offices healthier.

At windowsill we love plants – we love looking after them, we love looking at them, we love moving them around to make one in particular shine, we love the way they make us feel happy. And we love thinking about and talking about plants and finding the right one for the right place.

You can go big with a statement plant (yes, Monstera Deliciosa – I’m looking at you) or build a collection on your windowsill. It doesn’t matter if your space is sunny or shady or something in between – there’s a plant to suit. Why not have a chat with us at windowsill, see what we’ve got, see what you like and make a new green friend!
