Just to be clear- Marple Fest will go ahead as planned on the 30th! It’s only the festoon lights that will not be ready! We have a market, fair rides, Santa, celebs, food stalls and a parade so please come and support us! 🎄🙂

We wanted to update people in Marple on the Festoon lighting plans as it’s been some time since we last updated you. Please accept our apologies ; we do appreciate the efforts of local people in supporting the project.

There has been much discussion in the background with Stockport Council and we have had to re-visit the plans for a switch on of the festoon lighting on 30th November.


We are well on the way to getting the majority of the required permissions for the Festoon Lights and are very grateful for the support of our assigned District Centre Manager, Richard Daniels.


We need to work with Richard Daniels and Stockport Council to make sure we get this project right and that local property owners are confident with the plans as well. As soon as we have more detail we will come back to you.

We are sorry that the Festoon Lights will not be switched on in Marple come November 30th 2024 but we do hope that they will be installed in the first few months of the new year in 2025.

🚨UPDATE🚨

Marple Fest have made the difficult decision not to hold a Christmas light switch on event this year. This is due to there only being a very small number of committee members- 4! We cannot manage a large event at the moment. We need to recruit new members to the group as it takes a lot of man power to police such an event.
In regard to the festoon lights- the money is waiting, we need to raise another couple of thousand to make sure we have money for running costs and insurance. We are still in discussion with the council looking at ongoing liabilities, landlord permissions and overall planning permissions.
We are still plodding on and will keep you all updated as and when things change and we are still very much committed to lighting up Marple centre which we will of course celebrate once finished!

FUND UPDATE (Long post warning but worth it):

We don’t have the words. For some time we have been close to our GoFundMe total. But it wasn’t until last week we received some bitter sweet and amazing news.

Following on with a great man’s legacy, his family at a difficult time wanted to help our fund achieve its goal.

That’s right, with the jaw dropping support of Tognarelli family, MarpleFest has achieved its fundraising goal for festoon lights.

£2,500 has been donated for and on behalf of the late Tommy Tognarelli.

We celebrate Tommy

As you may know, Tommy was the co-founder and chief-organiser of Marple Beer Run. He fought so long in a battle he just couldn't win with cancer.

Words from Marple Beer Run

Tommy is an inspiration, and our hero. He founded Marple Beer Run (raising over £20k for local causes so far) but (even more impressively) helped 1000s of kids as a Scout leader in Marple for over 23 years, as well as helping to organise Marple Bonfire and getting involved with many local community committees. He was so generous with his time, and will be sorely missed by his friends and beautiful family.

Tommy loved Marple Beer Run, so they continued with the race. Stating that he would have wanted to support Marple in any way.

Our conversations with Adrian have been heartfelt and as a committee we have been stunned by this amazing gesture for Marple.

Whilst we (and Marple) are grateful to all donations from Marple People, the council, community groups and local business. The donation from Tommy has struck a chord with us. We’d like to find a way to dedicate the Festoon lights to Tommy and the hard work and dedication he has shown Marple over the years. And whilst our lovely community is full of like minded people. The legacy Tommy has given our community and people he has guided, will last for generations.
