Took my first batch of fabrics out of their dye baths last night and left them to dry overnight.

So here's the results before they went back in the pots for another soak ⚔

to some fabric mache samples ⚔
This is a good way to use up lots of tiny little scraps of fabric.

The first sample is a dark red cotton which is then layered with fabric scraps in similar colours....for this one I used reds, browns, creams and golds. A layer of gold organza is then laid over the top and held into place with an overlocked edge. I then used an embroidery machine to embroider in a gold thread all across the sample, creating free-hand lines and a slightly quilted fabric piece.

The second sample is made in exactly the same way but by using a different colour palette and types of fabrics, you can create a sample with a completely different effect.

As these pieces are fairly thick and padded, I'm going to make up some further samples to use as a base for my waistcinchers ⚔

Fresh batch of natural dyes on the go, ready for the fabric scraps when they've finished their milky bath 😍

At least this lot smells much better than the boiled up cones and berries 😁⚔

Lots of scraps of cotton crepe fabric having their first soak in a soya milk mordant bath ⚔

The fabric will be soaked for an hour, taken out to dry then repeated 2 more times. I pop the soya milk bath in the fridge between soaks so my kitchen doesn't smell all milky 🤢

(This mordant bath is 2 parts cold water to 1 part soya milk)

Here's the results of the first batch of dyes. I've included the untreated wooden bead so you can see the difference in colour.

The final dye colours are slightly different in real life as my camera phone is a bit crap 😁😁

Guelder Rose berries - pinky red
Alder cones - greeny brown
Haw berries - purpley red
Larch cones - light brown

I've got onions, cabbage, pomegranates and avocados to try next 😍😍
