🇬🇧 Join Us for the Blaisdon D-Day 80 Beacon Lighting 🔥

Parents, bring your kids to witness history in the making as we light the specially-commissioned Blaisdon Beacon, standing proudly opposite St Michael’s & All Angels church.

D-Day was the largest Naval, Air, and Land operation in history. We commemorate its anniversary by expressing our gratitude through respect, remembrance, and tribute to the many who sacrificed so much for the freedom we enjoy today.

The magnificent five-metre tall Brazier was hand crafted from recycled and upcycled steel by Blaisdon's own master metalwork sculptor, Ian Richardson. The Brazier basket is 1.5 m³ and together with the pole weighs nearly half a ton.

7:00pm Veterans’ Reception at Blaisdon Village Hall 🎖️

7:30pm Remembrance Service with wreath-laying, flag lowering, Last Post, and Reveille 🎺

8:00pm Enjoy family-friendly performances by the Forest of Dean Brass Band and our 1940s swing band choir 🎶. Indulge in a bite at the BBQ Field Kitchen 🍔 and drinks at the Tank Bar 🍻. Find a seat on a hay bale, catch up with neighbours, and take in the stunning views over the Severn Vale. 🌅

9:00pm Beacon Lighting Ceremony begins with our church bells Ringing Out for Peace 🕊️

Children from Hopebrook and Huntley will light the Lamp Lights of Peace and read D-Day 80 poems 📜

As the International Tribute is read, Piper Rhys will call upon our Guest of Honour, Mr. Les Meadows - son of a local D-Day veteran wounded on “Juno Beach” during Operation Overlord - to ignite the beacon 🔥

As its flames illuminate the twilight, the Last Post will play, followed by a moving encore from Piper Rhys and the Forest of Dean Brass Band 🎷

10pm Close: We'll Meet Again 🎵

WOW 🤩 what a day…!
The rain stayed away for most of it, and Cinderford Town crier got things off to a great start. We were thrilled that so many families came out to celebrate with us… it was far more than we had expected but we made sure that any child that turned up was able to make the most of what was on offer… the bouncy castles were a great hit and the queue for the free face painting/ glitter tattoo was continuous… and the last kids managed to get theirs as we were dismantling the marquee. Mitcheldean FC did a fantastic BBQ, and Peppers perfect pizza had a sell out day with rave reviews. The WI had a brilliant day, both on the tea and cake, and the bar… and we can’t forget the entertainers, live music and DJs keep the atmosphere buzzing, whilst kids had a goal shootout or dressed up in uniforms and cam cream, courtesy of Longhope and District RBL… and even though it was not a heat wave loads of people tucked into a yummy ice cream.

All of the free entertainment, subsidised WI goodies, and everything that was free for the children was made possible by donations from local businesses and Mitcheldean Parish Council. The team who organised the event wanted to provide a day for families to enjoy with minimal cost involved, and I am very proud of everything we managed to achieve, and wish to thank the volunteers who gave their time to erect/ dismantle the marquee or helping with the crafts and sunflower planting for the children, without whom the day would not of happened. 👑

By Friday night we hit our target of 1 kilometre…
It’s taken a group of residents months of dedicated effort to achieve, and I wish to thank everyone who has donated fabric and cotton…those who have cut, ironed, sewn, and tied. My challenge could not of been reached without a group of people willing to spend their time both coming together and working at home, or without the spaces offered by Forest Gate Church Mitcheldean, Mitcheldean Libary, and the community centre. A huge thank you to you all… and doesn’t our village look amazing! 🤩
