📢SHEEP WORRYING📢

Yet again there has been an incident of sheep worrying near the Showground. Although these sheep do not belong to our grazier on this occasion, there is no excuse for allowing dogs to harass and injure livestock.

Dog owners, please take note of the following, as taken from Gloucestershire Constabulary's recent post:

When walking dogs in rural areas, dog owners are advised about the following:
* You must ensure a field or area has no livestock in it before letting your dog off lead. It is the law to keep your dog under control and the responsibility falls with the owner.
* Always ensure your dog is under control in an area where there are livestock or wild animals.
* Be particularly vigilant during lambing season and always keep dogs on a lead during this time.
* If your dog is not good with other animals or people, avoid letting them off their lead when others are around.
* Don't allow people who may not be confident in doing so or have full control over the animal to walk your dog.
* Remember where there may be no livestock in a field one day, the same location could be full of animals the next.
* Ultimately a landowner by law, and as a last resort for protecting their livestock, is able to shoot a dog which they believe is worrying sheep. Police must be notified within 48 hours if this course of action is taken.

Applications for our 2025 Show on Sunday 17th August are now open and we are very pleased to say that there is NO INCREASE in pitch fees this year (in fact we haven't raised our pitch fees in 10 years!).

To ensure a good variety, we do limit certain types of stand and some of these are already filling up rapidly.

ATTENTION ALL DOG WALKERS

You may already have heard that there has been a serious sheep worrying incident at the Showground, with 2 sheep dead and more chased into the river.

We remind you that the Showground is private property. The ONLY footpaths are along the river bank and across the small field at the Monmouth end (to the right of the road down to the water board from the A466) to get to the riverside path.

Dogs must be kept on leads. Keep to the footpaths.

Our farmer is allowed to shoot dogs chasing sheep. We do not want this to happen but he is within his rights to protect his livestock.

Whether or not you believe your dog to be okay with sheep, the sheep are not okay with dogs.

This is the third incident involving dogs at the Showground in recent months. Our Secretary has been bitten by a dog, a dog has been attacked by another dog, and now this.

In addition, families with children use the footpath.

Please do your bit to keep the Showground safe for all concerned.

They also managed our social media presence in the run up to the Show and on the day, sharing important information and providing updates.

As we reflect back to this time last week, to a glorious day with blue skies, a packed Showground and fantastic atmosphere, there are a few important 'thank you's that we need to make.
