Flower of the week…

The Carnation

Often overlooked nowadays, these simple flowers are a staple in any type of bouquet and floral arrangement 👏🏻

With over 300 known varieties, thanks to clever genetic breeding, naturally the carnation is a pinkish purple colour🩷💜

The origins of this flower are highly disputed but this flower has always remained to be a great symbol of love, whether that be romantic or plutonic💌

Perhaps unknown to many, the carnation clove like scent is made out of a desirable botanical used in fragrant perfumes 💋

The carnation is also the national flower of the below countries
- Monaco🇲🇨
- Spain 🇪🇸
- Slovenia 🇸🇮

However none of the above areas are its largest growers. The biggest growers are in fact Colombia and Bogotá

Across the globe many countries have different associations with the carnation. In South Korea red and pink varieties of the flower are presented on Parents Day to show gratitude 🇰🇷 In France, the carnation is used as a staple funeral flower 🇫🇷and in China it’s the most used wedding flower🇨🇳

Whereas closer to home, Oxford University students traditionally wear carnations for exams, a white carnation for the first exam, a red for the last exam and pink for all exams in between 🇬🇧

⬇️LETS TALK SILK🎀

As with hessian and chiffon ties, silk ribbon is another favourite for bespoke and bridal bouquet’s 💐

The classic, soft style of silk adds that touch of elegance to any floral arrangement✨

For bridal bouquets especially, silk ribbon is lightweight, therefore allows for that romantic wispy moments when holding throughout your special day👰🏻‍♀️

As well as being lightweight, it’s durability decreases the chance of frayed edges unlike other options💪🏼

On the topic of bridal bouquets, silk ribbon comes in abundance of colours and widths making it easy to find one to match your colour scheme🎨

Unlike hessian and other textured ties, silk is soft to touch which makes it easier to hold during the day!

It’s also important to recognise that silk has always been considered to be a luxury fabric, and has been used for hundreds of years to add that extra element of sophistication✨

Flower of the week…

Hydrangea

This impressive summer flower is favoured among florists and clients alike. Coming in array of colours they can brighten any bouquet, floral arrangement or flower border🥰

Prone to being damaged by the cold, these flowers are better suited to being kept away from the wind and underneath a form of shelter.

Interestingly the word Hydrangeas is derived from the Greek word hydro which translates to water. The plant itself is native to several different countries in the world including, Japan, China and Korea with approximately 75 species being accounted for around the world.

From a florists point of view, Hydrangeas love water and often need to be bathed in it to help keep the multiple heads alive. This careful attention is all worth it when put together for that elegant majestic touch.

An emotional one for me🥹

A couple of weeks ago my family asked me to design and make a memorial wreath for our beloved Poppa.

11 years have passed since we lost our ray of sunshine and constant source of laughter. As many of you will have figured out by now, family means an awful lot to me and being able to make something for someone who meant so much to me was a true honour❤️

With free rein on the design I decided to choose a classic green and white style for a very traditional man, with a nod to our families farming heritage with the thistle. My Nanna also used to grow roses in their garden so these beautiful white avalanche roses provided that connection.

The below poem is something I read every year as our family remember this day and it’s something I’d like to share with all of my lovely followers…

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circle flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there. I did not die.
… he is with you forever🤍

Flower of the week…

Gypsophila 🤍

Otherwise known as baby’s breath, or Gyp in the florist world, is a highly popular perennial plant choice for many florists and clients alike.

When used as a filler its delicate appearance adds a soft and dainty touch to any bouquet or floral arrangement creating an elegant finish 🕊️

Other popular choices particularly in the wedding industry, is to have pure Gypsophila bouquets or Gypsophila accompanied by other flowers such as roses🌹

Grown in calcium rich soils helps to give Gyp its identifiable smell which some people love but some people aren’t as keen🙅🏻‍♀️

As pretty as Gypsophila can be it is also really important to understand that it is actually toxic to cats, dogs and humans can also have allergic reactions to it.
When handling, it’s important to wash hands after use and ideally wear gloves when working with it🧴🧼

It is also commonly used to decorate cakes and grazing tables however the rules and regulations surrounding the use of Gyp in the UK is changing in September 2024, so be sure to speak with your florist or caterer when discussing adding Gyp into any arrangement.

6 month recap ✨

We cannot believe how fast the last 6months have gone but from the bottom of my heart just thank you 🫶🏻

Running a small business is hard and tests your resilience and patience everyday but I genuinely wouldn’t change my job for the world 👏🏻 This industry is full of talent and it’s something I admire in so many suppliers, so many of which have become great friends and I have been so fortunate to meet along the way🫶🏻

The happiness and passion I feel for this business is unmatched and I’m sure all other florists out there will agree there is something so special about working with flowers💐

From bespoke bouquets for all occasions, to weddings and events, we’ve loved it all and will continue to embrace every opportunity that comes our way🥰

I am forever grateful to everyone that has supported our journey, it really does mean the world❤️

⬇️LETS TALK HESSIAN🎀

Hessian is a favourite choice of tie when creating a more rustic / country - chic bouquet💐

Made from natural fibres, it’s considered to be a more environmentally sustainable option over its synthetic competitors✅

As well as being used as ties for bouquets and in other wedding elements like favors, this material is also super popular within the arts and crafts world for its durability and its vintage appearance, adding that hand crafted finishing touch✨

Flower of the week…

Allium💜

These bold flowers add that pop of colour and height to any floral arrangement💐

Generally purple in colour and rounded in shape these clusters of flowers thrive in all weather conditions the spring and summer time has to throw at them👏🏻

With attractive seed heads, these flowers are also super popular with pollinators as this picture captures in our family garden 🐝

A fun fact about Alliums is they are members of the onion family! You’ll know what we mean if you cut the stem and or crush a leaf!

And with that the 2023 season comes to an end🥹💐I honestly have no words for how grateful and blessed I feel right now. Those closest to me know how tough this year has been for me mentally and physically with struggling with my mental health and ADHD diagnosis and collapsing on the bathroom floor there were some real low points where I’m not ashamed to admit it was really sh*t. HOWEVER in August I decided to change my life and take a chance. I left my full time job in the Civil Service to have some time out and fate drew me back to what I know and love, weddings and events an industry I was devoted to pre Covid. @lucyhodgkinson_89 owner of @ohsosweeteventhire I will forever be grateful in you seeing a spark in me that had been dim for a long time and @emmdaltonox owner of @fallinglikethestars_events no words can describe how indebted I am to you for investing your time and patience with me because I know I’m a lot!! To get to this point would never have been possible if it hadn’t have been for my incredible support network of friends and family. Thank you for never giving up on me, you know who you all are but a special thanks to @kirstydoyle01 for always being on the other end of the phone, my god have I bent your ear off and cried on your shoulder!! And of course @l_mulliner for providing all the laughs and entertainment and sisterly advice. Couldn’t have done it without my Sole Sistas🫶🏻(yes it’s spelt right it’s an inside joke😂)All of this combined is the reason why EJB Floristry has been born and has been such a success already.
