Torr Vale Mill is a wonderful Grade II* listed former cotton mill located in New Mills, Derbyshire. It is tucked away on picturesque ridge, at the bottom of the Torrs gorge by the River Goyt and Millenium Walkway. Torr Vale’s Past

The mill was built in the late 1780s, by Daniel Strafford and was known as Stratford's mill. It was powered by two waterwheels to spin and weave cotton until it was reb

uilt in 1856 and a steam engine was added. It continued to be driven by steam and water till the 1940s when electricity took over. Finally after 210 years of continuous textile production the mill closed its doors on this era in December 2000. The mill is now owned by us, a local family business who bought the Mill after its closure to bring new life to this imposing and beautiful site and to realise its potential as a local and national landmark. Sadly whilst we were working with others to develop plans and schemes for the future of Torr Vale Mill it fell victim to trespassers causing a great deal of damage, the worst of which was a fire destroying the one of the buildings in 2001. Despite this damage, and the costs of repairing it at our door causing further delay in refurbishments, we believe Torr Vale Mill has come through the worst and is facing a very bright and exciting future. The Mill has undergone some works in recent years so that it is now the home of Chemquip Ltd. Chemquip rents the First floor in order to carry on its business of producing specialist pumps and parts to the service the needs of the chemical industry throughout the world. Renovations of Floor -1 and the weaving shed area into an events venue started in 2010 and the doors opened to the mill’s first wedding in June 2011. The outbuildings of the mill were converted into warm welcoming cottages for holidays, opening in 2016 and 2018 saw the development and opening of the Ground floor of the mill hosting a smart suite of offices. In 2019 a restaurant/bar took on a lease in the link block as well as a delicious craft beer and artisan cheese shop opposite.

2021 has seen the completion of the renovations of the main mill roof so that the space can be put to good use in the near future. We are keen to involve the local community in our plans for the future of Torr Vale mill and we welcome ideas from those who wish to get involved. We do ultimately want to bring this historical place into a new era in which it is both financially and environmentally self-sustainable. Today we are excited about the increasing number of opportunities to involve the local and national community that are presenting themselves in this new stage of history for the Torr Vale mill. We truly believe that Torr Vale Mills can become a beautiful multi-purpose attraction to be enjoyed by businesses, locals and tourists alike. We hope to use this page to engage with those people who would like to work with us or just share thoughts, photos or ideas for Torr Vale. We look forward to seeing you all at Torr Vale Mill in the near future!
