Shaw House Experience learning, enjoyment and inspiration at this beautiful Elizabethan Grade I listed building
(1)

Shaw House was built in 1581 by Newbury clothier Thomas Dolman. This fine Elizabethan building was home to successive Dolman families, the flamboyant Duke of Chandos and the Andrews and Farquhar families. Shaw House then began a new life as a school for generations of local children. However in 1985 Shaw House was evacuated due to concerns about the structure of the building. Following a £6million Restoration Project you can now enjoy Shaw House!

Join us for a new talk with artist Anne Griffiths 'Cassandra Brydges, Duchess of Chandos; Wife, Stepmother and Interior Designer'.

Discussing the role of the eighteenth-century wife and how the life of Cassandra Brydges is represented in the installation ‘A Botanic Dream’ - there will also be a private view of the installation before and after the talks. Anne will explore her historical research into the relationship between the elite social and professional classes and how they influenced the study of botany.

Anne will particularly reference the representation of Cassandra’s role, household responsibilities and her pastimes within the work and discuss these in the context of her life with her brother at their family estate at Wollaton and her part in its refurbishment; work which stood her in good stead when, at the age of forty-three, she married her cousin the Duke of Chandos and took on the management of not just Shaw House, which became their favourite home, but also Canons, one of the finest properties in England of its day.

Age suitability (14+).

February half term visitors can enjoy a stunning new exhibition 'A Botanic Dream'.

Exploring eighteenth-century gender roles in the newly discovered science of botany, this installation is a beautiful display of hand stitched linens, collages and wallpapers by artist Anne Griffiths.

Taking a gentle look into how men displayed their wealth and status through their plant collections and knowledge of botanical taxonomy. In comparison, women who were discouraged from botanical study, found other ways to express their interest through what might now be deemed interior design.

Suitable for all ages, with a family friendly activity to enjoy.

Saturday 15 – Wednesday 19 February | 10am – 4pm | Free

Anne will also be presenting a talk to complement the installation on Thursday 20 February called 'Cassandra Brydges, Duchess of Chandos; Wife, Stepmother and Interior Designer' For more information and to book:
