We’ve been working alongside The Studio for almost a year now, in partnership as we look for new premises.

The work that has gone into it is huge, and Ella and Fran know their industry, craft and ability to deliver inclusive and skill based sessions better than anyone.

We’re seeking funds to continue the project and develop things further. If you can help by donating or sharing you’d be making a huge impact on a small creative business!

Ella and Fran are amazing, they’re some of the best instructors to have ever taught at Space Six and we’ve been supporting them since we left the building.

I'm really pleased to announce that Space Six is back, we have a new small studio space available for hire. Booking is extremely limited at the moment, especially during the evenings.

This is just the beginning of our new partnership with Fran & Ella of 'The Studio' who have been instrumental in getting this off the ground.

I'm still working on other things, exploring options to continue the work of Space Six. It has taken a while to get things back on their feet and this is only the first step.

I hope to reconnect with former clients and build new ones in our new space right in the middle of Gateshead's new up and coming creative zone and I'm very happy to be back with Atlas North East and Orbis Community

So you'll all have now seen the first images filtering through of the demolition of Commercial Union House, our former home on Pilgrim Street where for over 8 years we brought no-nonesense, low cost rehearsal and studio space where you could talk face to face with the business directors about your wants and needs.

I thought after a long silence it would be right to provide an update on things. To be honest there has been very little movement in securing a new premises. But we do have options, and we are exploring them as best we can.

Those of you who had face to face communication with us over the last few months will already know that moving forward I'm the Sole Representative at Space Six with Will taking on a more backseat role. It was always my aim to bring on board new directors and this is something I will continue to explore when the time is right, however without the security of a building, that time is not now.

The current financial market around the local councils is more focused on getting to the end of this financial year and with local elections happening in May, it could still be a few months before there is any concrete movement.

One thing I have learned over the last few months is that I miss the Space Six community very much, it was incredibly unique, and I don't think any other business could capture what we had over there. Whilst I have a lot more energy now (14 hour days do take their toll eventually) I have been missing a focus for that energy!

I can say for sure though, that we aren't slowly petering out, we will continue to explore every avenue and every resource at our disposal until they are completely exhausted.

Some of my advisors have said I need to do what's right for me on a personal level, and whilst there's still a chance to get ourselves back into a building and create something equally as good as what we had...dare I say better than what we had? That's what's right for me.

We have a proven track record for kickstarting businesses, freelancers and classes by providing a base for them to achieve their goals without risking their personal liabilities. We worked on a one to one basis to find something beneficial for all parties involved and we are immensely proud of everything we achieved.

Whilst Commercial Union House will fall over the next couple of months, I'll be doing everything in my power to make sure Space Six doesn't go down with it.

We've had a couple of weeks off to digest and recover from the gruelling close down schedule. Tomorrow afternoon I'll be back in the space six admin office...which consists of a sofa...at home!

We'll be catching up on a bunch of administrative work and sorting out invoices etc. We'd like to apologise for the number of admin delays over the last couple of months but running the place with a very small team and a run of bad luck really disrupted that process!

Here's todays Sunday vibe...I reckon I could get away with dressing up as Rupert Holmes 😂

Our first (of three) Office

I had been preparing a very elongated but still compact history of Space Six. But it is impossible to trim down the stuff that has gone on and what has been achieved in the last 8 years.

It started with the simplest of questions, as is often the case.

What do people in our position in the industry need right now?

It has been a rough old time lately, but we have now officially said goodbye to the building. However, we can confidently say, we have been the only company to answer that question and deliver a solution. There is no alternative.

The next phase is going to involve regrowing our roots, and we'll be looking for enthusiastic people to join and help me build a new team.

Right now, a week, maybe two. To gather our thoughts. Space Six is not dead.

About 7 years ago we fitted this floor, it took the best part of a day, and we were here til 3am hand sanding it and varnishing.

It took us an hour to lift it today and it is still in very good condition...let's find it a new home.

There's still a few office chairs and desks/drawers/bookshelves up for grabs at Space Six.

I'm having a big sort out tomorrow to determine exactly what and will put together a little gallery of what is left.

I've now got a bit of a team on hand to help me with clearing stuff out so will announce some more open browsing days so you can all come in and grab whatever.

Some late nights in the office ahead!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. It has only solidified the impact that Space Six has had on so many people and the community we have fostered here.

Space Six was very well prepared for life during the pandemic, and we were looking forward to coming out of that in a very strong position, until the announcement that we would have to leave the building. That is the only reason we are now faced with an uncertain future.

Our current plan is to move as much as we can into temporary storage whilst we weigh up our options. This will give us the time to really focus on the direction we want to move forward in and come up with a plan of action for the long term future of the business. At the moment, managing the spaces, winding down the building and managing all the ins and outs have divided our time so much we've been unable to focus on the bigger picture. So a month or two will give us a bit of a chance to do that.

It is a sad, yet secretly exciting time, and it is my hope moving forward that we can secure a new premises to keep delivering this incredibly vital artistic resource to the city center.

Hello Everyone!

Just a note to say, as we are working to get back up to speed and have already welcomed a few of you back to the space.

We are running at a reduced staff capacity at present, as a result of Covid we've been spread pretty thin and our office hours are significantly reduced.

We are trying to keep on top of emails and any phonecalls we might have missed, but we wanted to explain why it's taking a little longer than usual for requests etc. To be answered.

Thanks again for your patience as we navigate what has been a very difficult and confusing time for everyone.

We may only have a short period of time left in our building, but that doesn't mean we'll be slowing down our reopening plans!

Whilst we work to secure our long term future, our short term is here and now.

So I wanted to share with you a few things that we are working on!

1. Our official reopening for socially distanced classes and all other bookings. We have this pencilled in as April 19th!

2. Our new artists support group, a weekly gathering for anyone within the community to come along, have some cake and a cuppa and talk about everything, little or large, pressing issues, or just putting the world to rights!

3. Spacesixstories: we want to hear from you! how has space six helped you in the last eight years?

4. Membership revival and short term office space: we still have available offices for short term hire, on a monthly basis, until mid september 2021, great if you want to return to the city post lockdown. We also have hotdesking membership with fantastic views in our newly designed members hub!

There's lots going on, if we're going out, we're going out with a bang, let's show this city what they're going to be missing without us!

Ey up all,

We wanted to inform our community that Commercial Union House and all businesses currently occupying the premises have been put on their six months notice to vacate.

This is both an advantageous and devastating position to be in. Devastating to see the end to a building that has become an integral part of the arts landscape in Newcastle for the last 8 years, but advantageous as we have a six month break clause which many others (some of which you may know) do not have.

As the last year has shown us all six months is a long time and a lot can happen in it, and it gives us some breathing room to work out what to do moving forward. It also means that once restrictions lift, we can continue providing space to our community, be that via office hire, hot desking or rehearsal and class space by the hour.

We are working alongside building peers Ampersand Inventions, Vane, B&D Studios and others to support each other in how to move forward, currently we have little information but we will inform everyone once the shape of the future develops. The council have stated their desire to retain arts and culture facilities in a city centre decimated by Covid forced closures and we hope to explore this with them.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has had any involvement here at Space Six, we set out to create a community by artists, for artists. To grow their own projects, businesses and launch their careers and we would hope that you’d agree that we’ve done that.

We also hope that you in our community will support the Space Six project (as you have before!) so we can continue to support you in the future. So rest assured that we are working hard to find ways to continue this resource that has been such an asset that we have all loved so much.
