Almost four centuries ago this month, on July 28th 1631, the frightened villagers of Baltimore on Ireland’s south coast were brought into port in Algiers. They had been at sea since the horrors of June 20th, writes Mary McCarthy – horrors which led to the establishment of nearby Skibbereen.

More about Baby Maggie ...

FROM WEXFORD TO NEWCASTLE Irish family fights to save baby Maggie
In January 2024, baby Maggie was born in a small village in County Wexford. Unfortunately, it became clear that there was something not quite right and she was diagnosed with SCID - a rare, life-threatening immune deficiency condition.

The family arrived at the Great North Children’s Hospital at Newcastle’s RVI on 22nd April – it is one of only two hospitals to offer treatment in these islands.

Maggie needed a bone marrow transplant and fortunately her brother Paddy (aged 3) was a 100% match. On 5th June he had the operation, and two days later his marrow was given to his tiny sister. Now we hope and pray his bravery has saved his sister’s life.

Meanwhile, the whole Connor family are staying at the hospital: mother Sally (only 22 herself), father Henry, Paddy, and Sally’s mam, Celine. So far, they have done it all themselves but after so long with a stay of at least two months more, funds are very low.

The Irish Centre has organised a family friendly fundraising event for Maggie on SUNDAY 14TH JULY from 2pm. Please support it (see advert). You can also make a donation to the fund by cheque to Tyneside Irish Centre, by card to 0191 2610384, or by BACS to 30-99-50 AC 79943068, reference Maggie’s Fund.

Just like that we are coming to the end of our summer events, culminating in our Family Funday this Saturday the 13th from 10am to 1pm in Killingworth.
It would be fantastic to see as many of you & your children there, where they can showcase the skills, they learned over the past 6 weeks. It has been great to see them being introduced to Gaelic football, learn the fundamental skills and most importantly of all, have great fun!

The Family Funday is open to all, even children that haven’t been at the previous session are welcome along to give it a go, maybe wet the appetite for future events!!
On the day there will be:
• Coached Session/Activities
• Bouncy Castle
• Balloon Artist
• Totts corner
• Irish Music & Dancers at clubhouse from 12noon
• Raffle
• Kids will get a FREE snack from the Cafe and a goody bag to go!
Spread the word! Feel free to print the attached Poster/Brochure and put it up at your school or place of work.

Please Register for this free event through Eventbrite via the following link: https://tinyurl.com/newcastleupontynegaa
We can't wait to see you all on Saturday.

Our friend Brian sadly died in North Tyneside Hospital on Monday 17th June with his wife, Gill, and sister, Ann, at his bedside.

For those friends and former colleagues wishing to pay tribute to Brian McNally, who sadly passed away earlier this week at the age of 76, the details are:
3pm on Friday 5th July 2024 Tynemouth Crematorium, Walton Avenue, North Shields, NE29 9NJ

Since last September he had suffered increasing pain and discomfort from heart disease.

Many of you will remember the columns he penned for our North East Irish Community News. More will recall him as a celebrated football writer, travelling the world to report for the winner on big games including Ireland’s victory over Italy in New York 1994.

He was recognised by his fellow professionals when he won many awards, including WE Journalist of the Year. He also represented them, being an officer of the NUJ since his early days on the Sunderland Echo. Fans loved him too and the Football Fans Federation gave him their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He wasn’t always popular with the club’s owners though and he was even banned from Roker Park and SFP. Kevin Keegan was not too pleased either when Brian broke the story of his resignation on TV.

Writing about his friend, Ray Ryan (News of the World), he said: “We were both working class products of Irish fathers with our politics very left of centre. That almost sums him up but it is impossible to do so in so few words.”

Some of you will have been in the TIC when John Charlton received the Irish government’s award on behalf of Jack. Brian spoke with such eloquence showing his pride in his Irish heritage and, of course, his precious passport.

In conclusion, allow me to quote the obituary from the Sports Journalists Association:

“His passion, talent and dedication have left an indelible impression on these who had the pleasure of reading his copy. His unique voice and perspective will be sorely missed but his legacy will live through the countless lives he touched.”

Our sincerest condolences to Gill and Brian’s family and many friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
