Today I found myself just standing and starring at the daffodils when I should have been working. Have you ever had beauty captivate you to the extent that you can’t…or don’t want to do anything else? Their beautiful fragrance was being carried by the wind all over the little farm patch we have. I was contemplating whether it was possible to cut all the daffodils that are left and put them all over my house or if I should just leave them alone and find a chair and just park myself next to them.
There is just something about seasonal flowers, or seasonal anything. There is joy and grief and anticipation and learned patience. We cannot access seasonal things in an instant the way our culture and technology has taught us we can do with many things. We have to wait until the proper time…sometimes gracefully and sometimes not. And then we rejoice and revel in the beauty and joy that comes we when finally get to feast our senses on what we have been waiting for.
But seasonal things don’t last forever, and if we are attune to it, we notice a grief we carry as the season fades. This is where I found myself today.
A few years ago I was surprised to find just how beautiful specialty daffodils are. My pictures and videos don’t do them justice. They are so delicate and almost ethereal looking and their scent is unreal. Now they open up our flower season after a long wait through winter. They do not disappoint. And when I realize it won’t be long before the daffodils are gone, I feel a sadness that provokes me to try to find a thousand ways to be present and enjoy every last flower…because soon I will have to wait again until next year. This is part of the gift of seasonal flowers, seasonal produce, seasonal celebrations…if we let them, they teach us to be patient, to anticipate, to be present, to enjoy and to not take for granted.
We have so many daffodils that have blown open at once so we have a special offer-
If you’d like to come cut a bucket of your own daffodils for £30 get in touch. Flowers would need to be cut tomorrow (Friday) or Sunday afternoon. This applies to any of our daffodils that are fully open. You won’t get the full vase life out of them but they are perfect for an event or just to enjoy etc. See my stories for more details about which flowers.
Sometimes you just need a little beauty to lift your heart. Giving the gift of beauty to yourself or to someone else can make a world of difference…especially when the weather goes dreary outside. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple bunch of flowers!
Just hoping you’ve had a good day and wanted to give you something beautiful to look at for a moment…hoping you can take a moment to just pause and enjoy. Isn’t it a wonder that such beautiful things just grow at our feet?
If you are looking for something a little extra special, we now have gift bouquets! We take orders through messages until we get our website up and running ☺️
…though I’ve grown them for a few years now and see them on a daily basis in the springtime, I have a small vase of them in my house and when I walked by it yesterday, I stopped and said out loud to an empty room- “Wow! Those are so beautiful!” There are SO many types (over 10,000 actually!) besides the plain yellow ones. I love all the variety and colour and scent they have! And just like all seasonal things, they are only around to be enjoyed for a short window of time. I hope you get to enjoy some this year!
Did you know there were so many types besides the plain yellow ones?
I have been thinking recently about the pace of life in the western world and the amount of people I know, including myself at times, who live under constant stress. Then, I was at a gathering this last weekend where two men from different African countries said that there is no word in African languages for stress. A Korean man then also added there is not a Korean word for stress 😳. Oh my!
Stress is such a common part of our culture and to imagine a culture where stress is not even in the vocabulary is mind boggling…and inspiring! I am working towards a lifestyle with more peace and beauty and less stress and I came across a number of studies this week that actually say having fresh flowers in your home has been found to reduce stress levels! So if you are feeling particularly uptight, maybe take a moment and take a breath and bring some fresh flowers in to be enjoyed!
“Research from the University of North Florida shows that something as simple as flowers can help. The findings show that people who lived with flowers in their homes for just a few days reported a significant decrease in their levels of stress and improvements in their moods.“
We’ve been quiet on social media but busy trying to transition the farm from the end of this season to all the spring crops. The wee bean has been along for the ride and is growing like a weed. This week we have finished digging up our dahlias and next week we will be planting!
The wee man has been getting his introduction to the farm…so far he thinks it’s peaceful 😊…and that the dahlias are very pretty. Don’t mind my poor video skills at the beginning and end…I only have so many hands 😬.
Just here cutting some flowers for an order. Orders for fresh flowers will close in the next week or two as we begin to flip all our flower beds for spring!
Loving the flowers blooming this time of year!
The farm is producing some real beauty at the moment. We are taking orders still on a day by day basis until baby arrives 😊. After baby arrives there will be a bit of a break from orders, but we will keep you posted! We hope to open up some “cut your own” times after baby arrives as well. So stay on the look out!
