6 years and 11 months ago. The worst thing happened to a normal family, on a normal day.
A middle aged lady who was out shopping had a massive heart attack. Although her heart was restarted she never regained consciousness and her family and friends had to say good bye.
Meanwhile, a middle aged woman was slowly dying. She had an incurable autoimmune disease which attacked the bile duct causing an irreparable damage to the liver. This lady slept 19 hours a day whilst her young teenage children looked after her.
The day the family of the first lady said the most painful goodbyes, they also made the most courageous and generous offer when they offered her organs for transplantation.
Meanwhile the second lady and her family got the news that a suitable donor was found and a transplant could take place.
I am that second woman. Whilst I heard the news, I was simultaneously ecstatic at my new chance of life whilst Simultaneously grieving for someone who I had never met. I cried for hours both before and after the transplant .
Years later, I have watched my children grow, my eldest child has got married, I have celebrated birthdays I never thought I would experience. To that woman and her family, I will always be grateful.
Thank you..
Today is World transplant day. You never know if you will fall on one side or the other of this story.
But.... by sharing your wishes, you could help to save a life.
To anyone who has read this far. After death, our organs die and shrivel when they could save a life in the right circumstances. All you have to do is share your wishes.
