The Abbey community of pupils, staff and parents have raised over £16,700 this year for local, national and international charities. The money has been raised in many creative ways; homemade cake sales (which proved very popular with the Abbey boys!), quizzes, mini-enterprise projects, fun days and much more. The money has helped so many different groups such as our local hospice, inner city homelessness and supporting our friends in the Zambian Immersion Project to name a few. Next year the Abbey Community aims to raise even more funds and keep the spirit & ethos of Edmund Rice alive in our mission to care for those in need.

The 1st year football team took part in the Ulster Blitz on Friday past. It was a really enjoyable day with good weather and good football on show. The lads played really well and after a very tight group we made it through to the semis to play our neighbours St Colmans. After defeating them we moved on to played St Pats Maghera in the final. The boys gave it everything but just came up short in the final. The boys have made it to two Ulster finals this year and hopefully in the future will take the next step. Hard luck and congratulations to them.

The Abbey will be represented this year among the Campa Chormaic staff by Year 12 pupils, Ruairí Mac Cormack and Liam Rafferty, who will be assisting the fantastic team of top level coaches in delivering the 2016 camps.

Campa Chormaic is Ireland’s leading Irish Language and GAA summer camp! It celebrates Cormac McAnallen's ideals and is based around sport, language, culture and fun. Attendees spend the morning playing Irish language games in a classroom before going onto the fields for Hurling, Football, Handball and Rounders. They are given the opportunity to meet top-level inter-county stars and ask them questions as well get their autograph. At last year's camp, Niall Morgan, Ciaran Hughes, Jerome and Ryan Johnson, Donal O'Hare, Oisin McConville and a host of other names all spent some time at the camp. There is a video-watching session where the attendees come together to watch the 'Laochra Gael' programme about Cormac McAnallen. They receive a beautiful O'Neills jersey at the end of the camp.

The Newry camp will be in St Colman's College from Monday 4th July to Friday 8th July.
The Castlewellan Camp will be in St Malachy's High School from Monday 11th July to Friday 15th July.
Anyone who wishes to register can register on online or download a registration form online at www.campachormaic.com.

"Out of Breath" is a book of poems composed by our Head of English Mr Mel McMahon. After the recent and successful book launch in the Abbey there are a series of readings with the next being in Lurgan Library Tuesday 10th May . Mel has had success with previous publications and of this compilation of poems Mark Roper writes; '.. these are quiet, generous, graceful, memorable poems, never raising their voice, never needing to.'

Mel McMahon was born in Lurgan in 1968. With Adrian Rice, he co-founded the Abbey Press in 1997. His work has appeared widely in journals and anthologies and has been broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster. He has been short-listed for the Beehive International Poetry Prize and was a prize-winner in the FSNI International Poetry Competition (2015).

Mrs McGinley, Kyle Byrne, Tiernan Kearns and Fiontann Gregory attended Stormont Parliament Buildings today to meet Chris Riddell, the U.K Children's Laureate. He gave a very entertaining speech about his job as a writer and illustrator. The boys got a chance to ask questions, get books signed and were given a signed illustration to take back with them. They loved the event and also loved the Burger King they got on the way back!
