#164. 29-Jan-25. The completion of 16 years of these Open Mics - we started in Feb-2009. An exceptionally busy night with 12 performers, including two first-timers at The Globe, and host/MC Peter Shields forgoing a turn. We remembered Patrick McCormack, a regular audience member, who died last month. We missed his amiable presence.
Shaun Wilson kicked things off at 8:00 pm with 3 of his originals, then first-timer Alastair from Chudleigh did 3 strong covers, and we had a trio of Billy Joel songs from pianist Julian Turner, and 3 bluesy numbers from Steve Coledrick on a resonator guitar. Jenny & The Bets (trio) delivered 3 of their folky originals and then today's other first-timer here, Laurel Sills (pictured), impressed with 3 of her own songs. Back to the regulars with 3 contemporary covers from Barney Goodwin and 3 originals from Axel Van der Neut. It was now past 10:00 pm and after 3 harmonised Everly Brothers numbers from duo "Pauper's Fortune", with much singing along, and 3 covers from Matt Tanner, the audience started to thin. Those who stayed were rewarded with the rich sounds of guitar / bass duo "Skellum" on their 3 covers, and a rousing finish from Tim Matthews, who did 2, backed by Skellum's bassist Martin and cajónist Steve Dooley.
12 acts, 16 performers, 35 songs - 12 of them originals.

#163. 27-Nov-24. The last one of the year, as no Globe Open Mic in December. No prior teens session tonight, but 10 performers so it was a "3 songs each" quota kicked off just after 8:00 pm by host Peter Shields joined by Steve Dooley on cajón, followed by Barney Goodwin whose three included "Somewhere Only We Know", and then Roger Ash Wheeler (accomp. by Peter S) with three affecting Loudon Wainwright numbers. Guitar/bass duo "Skellum" delivered an impressive trio of "Shipbuilding", "A Day In The Life" and "My Girl" (with lots of singing along on that one), and we welcomed back Pete Mathews (pictured) on banjo, who did two, Axel harmonising. Then Dave Osbiston did "Don't Give Up" and "Fragile" and was joined by Peter S and Steve for "Long Time Gone". Then we had three well-received originals from Axel Van der Neut. By now 10:00 pm but the audience stayed with us and Pete Tansey was joined by Steve for "Sunny", "H***y Tonk Woman" and a slowed-down take on "Love The One You're With". Matt Tanner did three including a number by Incubus and the Friends' theme "I'll Be There For You", and Tim Matthews formed an impromptu band with Dave on guitar-bass, Steve on cajón and Johnny Young on fiddle for "Stand By Me" and numbers by the Stones and Creedence Clearwater Revival. As it was 10:45 and there was time for a closer, Peter S joined the band to do "Taxman" and it was going well until the PA blew up half way through and we had to call it a day. Oh well, see you in 2025!

#162. 30-Oct-24. Half-term week, and fewer performers than usual, but some very good quality music. Teenager Minti kicked us off at 7:45 with 4 songs, backed by Barney on guitar. Then teenager Elijah rocked lead guitar on 3 classics strummed and sung by Shaun. Peter Shields used a guitar effects pedal to give a Fender Rhodes piano vibe to his 3 numbers, and Steve Colderick gave us 3 Delta blues numbers using his metal-bodied resonator guitar and a bottleneck. Barney Goodwin (pictured) came back, as singer/guitarist this time, with 3 numbers confidently delivered, and Shaun Wilson sang three of his affecting compositions. It was still only a little after 9:00 pm and with only two acts left on the board, they did 4 songs each - duo Pauper's Fortune brought everyone out of the bar and into the room with their harmonies, and the crowd stayed for Robin Bower's Cuban and Spanish numbers. And that was it - we were all wrapped up before 10:00 pm, but we all went home happy.

Some of us Globe open mic-ers went to Dawlish yesterday to support the final Open Mic at the Marine Hotel and Tavern before the pub changes hands. It has been run for years by Tim Matthews, seen here with Steve Dooley and Karen Chapman Newton - Arts (Peter Shields and Jenny Dooley also attended and performed), and it was great to see Chris Durney and Dave Harvey there too.

#161. 28-Aug-24. August open mics can be unpredictable, with regulars away on holiday offset by visitors who may join in. In the event, this was a nicely balanced session, with an audience that lasted the course. We delayed the start a little due to roadworks closing Venton Straight, and host Peter Shields did one song before we got under way properly at 8:15 with 3 songs each from Hugh Clench, Steve Colderick, and Niall MacLeod, the last playing uke rather than guitar. Over to the keyboard next for the welcome return of Julian Turner ("JT", pictured) with 3, then back to the guitar with Chagford teenager Barnaby doing 3, and Paul Hirst played some singalong numbers on his century-old piano accordion. Nestor, a visiting teenager from London, sang an original song at the piano. Over to guitarist Shaun Wilson for 3 of his songs, then 3 from Okehampton teenager Asta. Tim Matthews from Dawlish did 3 with lots of audience singing along and fiddle support from Johnny Young, who stayed up for a final 2 from Peter. We wrapped up at 10:40.
No open mic in September (due to the Chagford Film Festival).

#159. 26-Jun-24. An extremely busy night. Two teenagers acts, Minti and Barnaby, filled the first half hour from 7:30 singing songs together and individually. Then it was 3 songs each from Fraser (visitor from Kenilworth, originals), 'Jenny & The Bets' trio (originals), Steve Colderick, and the 'Skellum' duo. Then Sean MacLeod from County Clare, on a 10-pub tour of the South West, did 3 originals. Then three each from Roger Ash-Wheeler (acc. James Goodwin), Alex Kumar, and Axel Van der Neut (joined by James). Keith, up from Torquay, then sang two covers with Robin Bower providing impromptu accompaniment, Matt Tanner did three, and finally the 'Chicken Souper Chargers' (Aaron Custance, Johnny Young and Steve Dooley) closed the show in typically accomplished and enjoyably riotous fashion. 13 acts and 38 songs.
We overran our usual closing time, and host Peter didn't get to play - but was happy doing the sound on a new PA system.
Photos show Fraser (in T-shirt), Sean Macleod Musician and Author, and The Chicken Souper Chargers.

#158. 29-May-24. A pleasingly busy Half-Term session, with 11 acts doing 3 songs each and a good audience. Peter Shields kicked off proceedings at 8:00, and was followed by teenager Barnaby, Pete Tansey, Tim O'C (half of duo 'Hooked' who played last month), 'The Leon Redbones' duo (Axel Van der Neut on voice/guitar, Ian Atherton on piano accordion - pictured), Shaun Wilson, 'Deacon Martin & Brother Ben' (guitar/vocal & violin duo), 'Pauper's Fortune' duo (Dave & Caroline), Matt Tanner, 'Poultry Rewards' duo (Aaron Custance & Johnny Young) and finally Tim Matthews (also joined by Johnny Young on violin). We wrapped at 10:45.

#157. 24-Apr-24. A strong start at 7:15 from the teenagers, with two songs each from Barnaby, Minti, and Asta, followed by a trio of rock songs showcasing young teen lead guitarist Elijah, joined by guitar teacher Shaun.
From 8:15, we had 3 songs each from host Peter Shields, Pete Tansey, duo 'Pauper's Fortune', duo 'Hooked' (Stuart & Tim, pictured) in a first appearance here, Shaun Wilson, duo 'Skellum' (John Kerry with Martin on bass), and finally 3 songs and an encore from 'Chicken Coop DeVille', Aaron Custance joined by a scratch band with Johnny Young on fiddle and Steve Dooley (who had accompanied several acts in the course of the evening) on cajón. We wrapped up at around 10:15.
31 songs from 11 acts - a great evening!

#156. 27-Mar-24. The One Where It Snowed. We had a really lovely teens session with 5 acts, kicking off at 7:15 with Phoebe & Ciaran, Minti, and Himaya who all did 3 songs each - variously with guitar, piano and backing tracks. Then Asta and Barnaby both did two each taking us up to 8:30.
Lee Coatham kicked off the adults session with three songs (one sung by Yvonne) on both piano and guitar, then Niall MacLeod sang 3 well-chosen Beatles numbers to ukulele accompaniment. Wez Cutler (pictured) in a welcome return, sang 3 of his impressive originals. Jenny & The Bets in both 4-piece and 5-piece configurations followed at 9:15, when it started snowing heavily. Roger Ash Wheeler followed and the snow continued falling hard and Steve Colderick, who had been due to go on next, decided to head home before the roads got too bad. So Pete Tansey was last on the bill with 3 songs variously accompanied by cajón (Steve) and uke bass (James) and fiddle (Johnny Young). Host Peter Shields called it a night at 10:15 as all were keen to get home.
The snow continued falling for another hour

#155. 28-Feb-24. Our 15th anniversary of starting this Open Mic in Feb-09. We kicked off at 7:20 with the teenagers' session (and they weren't all born when this Open Mic was inaugurated!) with strong sets from Phoebe & Ciaran (3 songs) and Henry (4). Then young teenager Elijah rocked some lead guitar on two numbers sung and played by Shaun Wilson. Host Peter Shields did 3 covers, as did Steve Colderick. Shaun Wilson then did 3 originals, as did Jenny and the Bets (Jenny, James & Steve). Duo Pauper's Fortune (Dave & Caroline) gave us 3 covers, including a spirited 'Mystery Train' complete with train whistle. Aaron Custance (pictured), in a welcome return visit, delighted the audience with 3 highly entertaining numbers with Steve on cajón. Axel Van der Neut did 3 of his songs, and Niall MacLeod sang 3 covers with uke accompaniment. It was just past 10:00 by this time and Tim Matthews finished off with 3 singalong covers with mandolin accompaniment from James and Steve on cajón. We wrapped up at 10:20.
3 hours of music and 36 songs from performers aged 13 to 70s, a fitting celebration of 15 years of the Globe Open Mic.
