Cor Creative recently visited Nottingham Contemporary to deliver a cosy, peer-to-peer workshop for our 1525 Collective members. Facilitated by Amira Dabboussi and Maya King Dabbs, we focused on portfolio building and the concept of personal archives. Through storytelling and the use of archival materials, our members explored how to create and document personal archives that enrich their portfolios. The session sparked conversations about the role of archives in creative practice and the challenges of preserving your artistic legacy. A big thank you to everyone who joined us!

In our second session of the '1525 Rights to Our City' series, we explored local parks, pavements, and hidden spots to find 'volunteer plants', a kinder term for what many call 'weeds'. We gathered plants with interesting shapes and used them to make cyanotype prints, a type of sun print known for its vibrant blue colour.
Take a look at how Paul Mpagi Sepuya uses cyanotype prints in his current exhibition ‘Exposure’ here at Nottingham Contemporary.
🌍Don’t miss our third workshop in this series on Sat 20 April, free and open to all young people aged 15-25. Link to book in bio. See you there!

“This is the sigil of the spirit Saphœðra (sah-fo-ethra) …
Saphœðra brings her power and protection to the wishes and desires of q***r people placed into her care, represented by the sigils that surround her own, and nurtures them safely into fruition...”
Saphœðra (sah-fo-ethra) emerged from a project sparked during our Ridykeulous exhibition season. Drawing inspiration from the Ridykes, this project uses sigils magic as a tool for radical change. We worked with GenderPhoria , led by Winter Beaumont , to create a collection of sigils. The sigils were integrated into a powerful ‘mother sigil’ created by Winter to provide protection and unity.
✨Thank you to our friends over at , , , and for visit and support during our launch night!
You can view our sigil artwork in our calm space within Gallery Zero.

To kick off our first workshop in the ‘1525 Rights To Our City’ series, our associate artist Amelia Daiz of led us on an exciting exploration of our neighbourhood. We used photography, experimenting with textiles and gel filters, to transform spaces in imaginative ways. As the session progressed, we began to craft a mythology about Nottingham’s past, present and potential future using map-making and drawing to bring our visions to life.
🌿Our next workshop is on Sun 31 March, free and open to all young people aged 15-25. Link to book in bio. See you there!

INTRODUCING... Prue, our GM for Defenders of the Great Oak!
Prudence (she/they) is a community leader, writer, and avid player of table top role playing games (TTRPGs). With 10 years of experience under their belt, they have launched various digital and community projects focused on the power of table top storytelling – anything from folklore storytelling to audience driven collaborative gaming. They founded and coordinated Roll For Good, a charity initiative highlighting and playing games within the European TTRPG community and raising over £6000 for charity to date. They have released two of their own games – ranging from fun uses of physical space to emotional lyric games with a focus on self-identity. When she is not gaming, Prudence is an environmental scientist, enjoys fantasy worldbuilding, and exploring our place in the natural world as part of her gaming.

The rhythmic, fluid and fast movements of Capoeira.
We had a Capoeira Taster session lead by organisers of .geracao2022. In this introduction to Capoeira, we were encouraged to connect with the ground below us and to be present in our bodies, as we moved around the Temple space.
Despite the fact that Capoeira has been in the UK for over 30 years, it is still unknown to many people.
Nova Geração 2022, is a 3-day event involving Capoeira, music and workshops led by up-and-coming young teachers. We are thrilled to be hosting the final 2 days here at Nottingham Contemporary.

We are thrilled to be hosting the final 2 days of Nova Geração 2022, a 3-day event involving capoeira, music and dance workshops led by up-and-coming young teachers.
Created by Capoeira Collective and WAHAD, a collective of young Capoeiristas around the UK, this event is for people that are interested in capoeira, those with years of experience and anyone interested in trying capoeira for the first time.
Despite the fact that capoeira has been in the UK for over 30 years, it is still unknown to many people. With the introduction of social media, capoeira is becoming more popular, with many dancers, martial artists and movement practitioners showing interest in capoeira. By calling on some of the most talented young Capoeiristas in the UK, this event aims to create a safe space where young people in the capoeira community can meet others that share the same interests.
A capoeira event like this has never been attempted before in the UK.
Sat 30 Apr – Sun 1 May, book your tickets at the link in our bio.

Last month we hosted a workshop with Architectural Designer William Harvey and artist Ryan Boultbee, two creatives obsessed with the built environment.
The small group gathered to share their thoughts on the future of Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, an unofficial landmark that welcomes you to the city. It is likely to be the last coal-fired power station in the UK.
Using an architectural scale drawing, depicting the empty shell of a cooling tower, we encouraged everyone, individually and collectively, to share their ideas about what a future re-use of this part of the infrastructure could be. We saw a range of fabulous ideas, including vertical farms, community housing, a giant game of snakes and ladders, and a colossal pop-up cinema. We stuck all the drawings onto the walls of Nottingham Contemporary, assembling a micro exhibition to collectively soak up the creative possibilities.
What do you think the future of Ratcliffe-on-soar power station should be?

Board the train to the future.
As part of our work with to co-create a wellbeing-centred installation imagining the garden shed as a Museum of the Future, we worked with local artists to put on a series of workshops.
Inspired by fantasy, sci-fi, and nature, four workshops were undertaken to create the pieces and give the participants an opportunity to curate their own space.
In the second workshop, the focus was on sound, frequencies and light. Participants were given props, instruments and prompts to create expressions of what they believe the future will sound like.
You can listen to a recording of this put together by artist Benjamin Rostance at the link in our bio.

With the guidance of a team of artists, we worked with two groups at to co-create a wellbeing-centred installation imagining the garden shed as a Museum of the Future.
Inspired by fantasy, sci-fi, and nature, four workshops were undertaken to create the pieces and give the participants an opportunity to curate their own space.
An aspect of this project was the formation of a toolkit that would highlight areas of interest for the development of future workshops that may increase their accessibility and usefulness for future attendees.
The toolkit was written by Benjamin Rostance, and includes details of the work, and 10 Recommendations for both workshop providers and participants.

Have you ever wondered…what does the future hold for Nottingham?
We teamed up with Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies to create Gamechangers 2094, a video game aimed at turning these thoughts into reality.
Set in the year 2094, Nottingham Contemporary is at the centre of one of the last remaining strongholds of civilisation. Atop of this building stands The Major Oak - a sanctuary for the citizens of a future society. Explore its roots and meet friends along the way.. together we will navigate this new world in an adventure that will teach us lessons of humanity, survival, and kinship.
This game was developed over a series of five, short workshops at Nottingham Contemporary, and launched on our cafe terrace last week. You can now download the game to try it out yourself at the link in our bio.

In 2021, we worked with local art space and community interest company @gasleakmountain to host a series of workshops for an LGBT+ youth group @base51_outburst at @base5_1 . Through the sessions which explored queer utopian futures, the young people produced a series of oracle cards which act as tools for self reflection. 🔮
Each card comes with a description to help the user understand it, which you can view on our website at the link in our bio.
The oracle cards are all currently on display in the foyer outside our café so do pop in to view them in person.

Over the years our young people have been involved with some major projects within our gallery and around the city.
Since 2010, we have always offered valuable creative learning experiences for young people. Before 1525 Collective, our collective was called Collabor8. The Collabor8 collective grew from of a national programme called Circuit led by Tate and funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation, which took place 2013-2017 and aimed to connect 15–25 year olds to the arts. Through this project, nearly 10,000 young people in the programme were involved in programming, courses, events and workshops
In 2015, Collabor8 organised Affinity Festival. After a year’s planning, programming and hard work and dedication, the festival became a huge success, reaching 4,000 young people aged 15-25 over two days. Other events include Collabor8’s regular party events, Frequency, which included music, gaming, creative workshops, vintage photography booths and more. Collabor8 also programmed regular after-hours film nights inspired by our exhibitions, among many other events.
1525 exists as a space for you creatives in Nottingham to come together to support each other and our creative interests. We meet on a weekly basis to engage in discussions, attend workshops, plan and execute events and more. Our aim is to respond to issues facing young people in the city, and to encourage a connection between young people and the arts.
If you would be interested in getting involved, contact our youth programmer - Wingshan - for more information: [email protected]
