Introducing Mr Punch - taken from the Italian Pulcinella, first appearance in the famous Commedia dell’arte in 17th Century Italy, the puppet who plays centre stage in the English interpretation first performed on the 9th May 1662 at Covent Garden. The character himself it is thought was an Italian peasant of Acerra, Puccio d'Aniello. The name variations across europe as he made his way to England, in Hungry; Paprika Janci, Denakrk; Mester Jakel, Germany; Kasper and the Netherlands; Jan Klassen. What ever name he is known by it is true to say that for over 300 years he has caused havoc and mayhem whilst entertaining children and adults alike. The spin I place on Rutland's only known P&J show attempt to be less violent toward his wife with an element of pantomime encouraging audience participation, which was always a Pulcinella hallmark.
