It is with the deepest sadness that we reflect once more on another sad and sudden passing connected to the Greencastle 5.
We send our deepest sympathy to the dear family of Pat McBride RIP. We were shocked and saddened to learn of Pat's sudden passing when news emerged yesterday morning.
Pat was our 1989 event winner and brother in law of the Greencastle 5 event founder Oliver McCullagh. He was a keen road runner and marathoner often seen training on the scenic routes and steep hills around his beloved home village of Cranagh.
Pat always made the trip to Greencastle for the annual Boxing Day 5mile road run and took part in the most modest way, enjoying every mile.
Carrickmore runner Dominic McCartan recalled how he and Pat had a close running rivalry during the eighties, very close in ability, often pipping each other.
In the 1989 Greencastle 5, Dominic says he had a good look around on the line and thought "I could take this". Pat was his only competitor both having finished closely the previous year around the 28 minute mark, "Finish time was not important that year, we both wanted the win", both men fancied their sprint finish, running the whole race saving a bit for the end, Pat sat on Dominic's shoulder all the way until the sprint started, "McBride got me on line"!
Both men have been loyal regulars in Greencastle over the years, Pat was always a category prize winner most recently finishing 1st M70 in 2017, 2nd M70 2018 & 2019.
In recent years, Pat's sons have taken part, keeping up the tradition.
We offer our deepest sympathy to Pat's beloved wife Johanna, his daughter Lucy Maria, sons, Raphael, Pascal, John Patrick and grandson, George. We also remember dearly his daughter Anne-Marie RIP who has gone before him and all the McBride and McCullagh family connections. Pat was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a dearly loved brother, uncle and friend. This world is certainly a poorer place today for his passing but we are so lucky to have known him and we will take comfort in all the wonderful memories that Pat has left us with. We will never forget his gentle friendship, he was too good in life to be forgotten in death. May Pat's gentle soul and working hands rest in perfect peace 🙏

It's with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of Claire McGill's (nee Devlin) passing this morning. Claire is originally a local Greencastle lady and to many in our area was known as Mrs McGill, being one of the best teachers of English and PE at St Joseph's High School Plumbridge where she taught with her late husband (Jackie) Mr McGill. Claire taught many of the local children, not only from the curriculum, she had a special presence about her and she listened to the pupils and taught them much more than what could ever be covered in the classroom. She had time for people and a style that was way beyond her time.
Jackie and Claire (RIP), along with the families of the 'Crossroads' have been at the forefront of our long established Greencastle Boxing Day 5 Mile Road Race event helping each year with the much appreciated water stop just over the half way mark.
Below you can see a picture of both Jackie & Clare distributing the water at the 3 mile mark at the Crossroads in 2013. They faithfully turned up each year to take on this task without ever having to be asked and the Devlin family along with their neighbours still continue to do this.
We feel privileged and delighted that we have had their loyal support over the past 37 years. How lucky we are to have had them in our lives and learned from them over the years.
We as a Club extend our deepest sympathies to Claire's brother, Colum (Josie) and Sister, Sheena (Sean) and to her Nieces and Nephews and indeed to the entire extended McGill and Devlin familes at this lonely time.
Writing this I am thinking about the many mistakes that Mrs McGill (RIP) would find in it if she was to read it, she had a great ability of finding grammer errors in even the most thoroughly checked piece of work that you would hand in.
Mrs Claire McGill may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace, our thoughts and prayers will remain always with you.
Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a hanam uasal. Inár gcuimhne go deo.
Far too good in life to be ever forgotten in death. 🙏❤️☘️📖

So the 37th Annual Boxing Day Run has been and gone. What a day it was. We woke to the ground covered in a layer of snow, which was not expected and it continued to snow right up to race start time with some fog threw in for good measure but in true 'Olly' fashion nothing was going stop the race going ahead. Thank you to all those who helped secure the gritter lorry to clear the route. It sure did make a huge difference, and we are so very grateful.
We were so overwhelmed with the numbers that turned out to both take part in the run and walk but also all those who came along as spectators and supporters, lots of old familiar faces and so many new ones, we noticed you all and it is because of you that we can create such an amazing atmosphere each year. Congratulations to all participants and all those who came out top in their categories. It was another very competitive, impressive race.
Of course, this year, the build-up and actual event was tinged with sadness and a great sense of loss without having Olly to oversee everything and make all the contacts, but one thing is for sure he was certainly looking down a very proud man at how his family, Connor, Pierce and Olivia managed to pull it all together without missing a detail and how they held their composure throughout in what was no doubt a tough day for them. They certainly learned from the best, and it showed on the day. The whole community came out in force to get involved, just how Olly always wanted it to be. Yesterday was a celebration of the great love Olly had of athletics, and in particular, running so it was so very fitting that Grace Carson broke the female course record, setting a new course record for the years ahead. We would like to thank all those who helped out for the past number of weeks and in the day. To Cathal, Stephen, Connor, and Pierce for their tireless work on the start/finish gantry, it looked amazing. To Tayto and Ann at Kerry Group for the finish bag treats and Mullaghmore Bakery for the after race refreshments. To Ann, Brianna, Siobhan, and Nicola for sorting all the entries on the day. To Pat Clarke and his amazing team of stewards,
James Touhey, Terry Conway, Martin Conway, Michael McNamee, Fiachra McNulty, Charlie Warnock, Kieran Fox, Martin & Sean Tracey, Mo & Dermot Bradley, Eddie McCullagh, Martin Haughey abd Sean Clarke. They always do an amazing job each year with parking and traffic flow, we are so grateful. To the McCullagh family and all their helpers who put so much work in preparation and serving of all the refreshments pre and post race. They ensure no one goes home hungry, the hospitality is first class and so much appreciated. To Kitty for the festive and amazing mulled wine, it really adds to the occasion and is so welcomed by everyone, especially on a wintery day like yesterday. To all those who manned the timing mats, prepared the race course with mile markers etc, helped pack the finisher bags and pack pre-reg entries, Thank you! To Josie, Colum, Jinny, and Ann for organising and manning the refreshing 3 mile water stop, it is so appreciated by all.
To all the helpers handing out the pre registration packs and all those who helped set up and tidy up, it really was such a great help. To the Order if Malta and Raynet for their professional services on the day, we always feel well covered when we have such good services as these by our side, thank you so much. To Andrew for his expertise as race commentator and to Ray for providing the music along the route, it was amazing and a great source of encouragement to the participants. Thanks also to Greencastle Community Centre for the use of their facilities. Finally , a huge thanks to our loyal sponsors. Year after year, they step up to offer their sponsorship towards our event and without this extra help we would never be able to run our event at the level we do... Shire Enterprises Ltd, PJ McCrory Ltd, O'Kane Plumbing, AFS, McCullaghs Centra and Alskea, your continued loyal support is so much appreciated by us all.
Thank you to each and every one of you, it really was a community event and effort, and it was enjoyed by all, just how Olly would want it. We wish you all a very happy, healthy 2023.

James Edgar and Grace Carson were the winners of the 37th Oliver McCullagh Greencastle 5 Miles in Co. Tyrone.
Some 600 runners braved sub-zero temperatures and snow flurries to complete the demanding course in the foothills of the Sperrins. It was the first hosting of the event since the race founder Oliver McCullagh passed away earlier this year.

Edgar made his intentions clear from the gun and was well clear of his pursuers as he passed through the Greencastle village at the three mile mark. The City of Lisburn runner made light of the dreaded hill to maintain his advantage all the way to the line which he crossed in 24:35.

Former NI/Ulster cross country champion Neil Johnston made determined efforts to close the gap in the later stages and was rewarded with a runner-up spot in 24:49.
St. Malachy’s Paddy Robb took third in 25:24 seeming off the challenge of his teammate Conall McClean by just two seconds.
Lagan Valley’s Lughaidh Mallon (26:56), the first U20, and City of Derry’s John Leneghan (27:05) made up the leading half dozen.

As expected Mid Ulster athlete Grace Carson was in a class of her own in the women’s race taking half a minute off the course record registering a 27:37 clocking in eighth place overall.
North Down’s Rachel Gibson filled the runner-up spot with a 32:03 timing as local girl Niamh Heaney of Omagh Harriers took third in 32:50. Armagh AC’s Martin McKenna was first Master in 10th overall recording a time of 28:28 while Pauline McGurren claimed the corresponding women’s prize in 33:43.
