The new studio still isn’t finished, life and weather have definitely conspired against me this year.

But, always eager as ever to get my flower fix, I retreat to this beautiful space in between the busyness of life to play with flowers!

Earlier this week in and amongst hail, snow, rain and thunder we had a short burst of the most beautiful sunlight…for those of you who can’t remember what this is, it’s truly an amazing thing! This big glowing ball of yellow that resides in the sky finds a c***k in the clouds and radiates warmth and a beautiful glowing light on everything it touches…please let me know if you see and feel it! 😂🌞☀️🌤️

When this short opportunity Presented itself to me on Monday, I rushed up the garden to see what the light was like in the studio. These shots are the result and I’m pretty chuffed, no filter just beautiful light flooding through the windows.

Simply joyful! 💛

I’ve always been a bit obsessed with colour and especially fascinated by the colours that naturally occur in nature.
This junk shop find mantle vase was perfect for my experiment, combining colours from one of my favorite books that was first published in 1814 and was used by Charles Darwin in his scientific observations. (Not this ‘actual’ book of course!😆)

This is most definitely not an ad, it’s just a fabulous source of inspiration to create palettes from!Jx

Still on the theme of yellow, it intrigues me how this one colour divides opinion more than any other.

Even after a resurgence in fashion and
Interiors a few years ago, it still is considered a bit marmite.

I have to admit it has grown on me over the years, and I now embrace it in my work at certain times of the year when it’s in abundance in nature.

It amazes me that as a colour yellow can be considered joyful and positive, then on the opposite side of the spectrum it denotes danger and caution.

What do you think?

Amazing what you can do with a few rusty old bread tins isn’t it!

Gifted to me a few years ago by cousin Rob these rusty old bread tins made for a grand daffodil runway down the center of the table.

Now don’t be thinking we’re dead flashy here…looks can be deceiving!

This table for 19 was created using smoke and mirrors, plus a trestle table, 2 benches, my studio chair, Ian’s office chair, plus other random chairs from around our house plus 4 chairs from my bff’s house.

We had random cutlery and random sized plates. After moving the table(s) diagonally across the room so you could hardly walk past, our Easter family gathering held a week late due to me and Ian being rather coughy and snotty went swimmingly!

Where there’s a will there’s a way!

Today’s going to be a bit of a thinking, plotting & planning day after returning home from a week away. I’m full of cold and indeed a tad bit snotty so I’m going to be kind to myself, now all the cases are unpacked and the washing is done it’s time for me!

Always remember, it’s ok to give yourself time to just stop, get your ducks in line and take stock.

I do think a grand old weathered bench is high up on the list of places to do this, don’t you! Jx

The happiest of anniversaries to A & C who married a year ago today!

We only do a select amount of weddings each year, but this one was truly special, here’s what the bride & groom thought :

It was a pleasure to have Jane ‘do’ (such an insufficient word for the creativity and effort involved) the flowers for our wedding! I was so pleased to discover a florist who was as passionate about sustainability as I am; most of us are trying to be more sustainable in our every day lives but weddings seem to be an area where that is still quite difficult. Jane took the time to really understand and develop my vision, taking quite vague ideas about greenery, scent and sustainability and creating something truly beautiful. Our guests absolutely loved the plants that we had as centrepieces and were thrilled to take these home, while we’ve been able to retain a long-lasting memory of our day by taking home the plants from our table and putting them in our garden/ windowsills. Both sets of parents have also added a plant to their gardens which has been lovely to see.
I had so many compliments on my bouquet (which I am having dried and framed and am really looking forward to seeing), and one of the staff at the venue said it was her favourite ever set up. Overall just incredible, thank you so much Jane!

For me the most important thing when choosing your wedding florist is this - you share the same principles and you trust in their creativity to bring your dream alive, stick to this and you won’t go far wrong!

Also…

Luxury, quality and style doesn’t need to cost the earth ‘literally’! In this case for A & C the majority of plants and flowers are still living on in some way, even C’s bouquet was dried and preserved in the form of a beautiful artwork created by Madeeco London.

It’s 05.10 am on Monday morning, I couldn’t sleep, so I got up to make a cuppa. We returned yesterday evening from a lovely week away in the French Alps…in that week the curlews have returned, the daffodils are out and spring is in full flow in the garden, it’s crazy to see what a difference a week makes isn’t it! I can’t take the credit for this little pot vase of hellebores, it was created by the very talented Éva Németh at the the other week.
I can take the credit for the photographs, however, I’m absolutely no expert, but I do have a passion for capturing the things I love.
These photos were taken putting into practice some of tips from Éva…as they say, practice makes progress! Jx

This time last week our Kokedama workshop was in full swing and what a blissful few hours.

Starting with a wonderful tea meditation by the beautiful soul that is Katherine from we grounded ourselves, before learning more about this beautiful Japanese art form.

We listened to Kigaku court music, one of the oldest traditional forms of music in Japan, whilst experiencing Kōdō (香道, “Way of Fragrance”) the art of appreciating Japanese incense.

I’d love you to join me for our next Kokedama workshop which we will be launching in the next few days, I hope you can make it! Jx

Clinging on to my cup of tea for warmth as I strolled around the walled garden just before the start of Monday’s retreat, embracing the calm and quiet.

A still and foggy start which evolved into a cold but sunny day.

It really did feel like spring was announcing its appearance and shooting its starting pistol for the beginning of the season.

Absolutely bereft that we have to say goodbye to one of our beautiful sycamores today.

The tree was made up of three limbs, sadly one of the limbs was diseased and fell down in a storm back in November, meaning that stress is effecting the other two remaining limbs and if left they will fall too, we’ve been holding our breath every time there’s been a storm!

I’ve asked the tree surgeons to carve a seat out of the stump so at least it can live on a bit longer.

I’ve watched this tree more than double in size over the last 25 years, so it will be sadly missed.

I’m thinking a willow of some description might be a worthy replacement…any recommendations welcome! Jx

KOKEDAMA WORKSHOP

I have been very fortunate to have visited Japan for my job, and one of many things that stood out to me was the considerable influence that plants have on the lives of the people living there. Plants are everywhere - in homes, shops, and buildings. Hanging, sitting, or climbing, they gently weave their way into everyday life in an extraordinarily thoughtful and considered way.

I have always been intrigued by the practice of Kokedama where the act of cultivating plants is considered an art form and a source of meditative tranquility. The Japanese believe Kokedama can eliminate negative energy from your space, bringing peace and calm to help balance your mind, body & spirit.

In this beautiful hands-on workshop, you will create your own mesmerising Kokedama while learning more about this traditional Japanese art form.

To make this a truly immersive experience, we will drink a choice of tea infusions created with organic and foraged herbs by Retreat Remedies. While creating, we will listen to instrumental kigaku (器楽), one of two types of Gagaku (雅楽) court music, the oldest traditional music in Japan. The studio will be infused with the smell of traditional Japanese incense.

We will discuss selecting the right plants, preparing the roots, creating the right mix of soils to form your root ball, and finally, binding and forming moss over the root ball, creating the beautiful spherical Kokedama.

You will create three designs: the first using plants, the second using bulbs, and finally, a simple bowl design. At the end of the workshop, you will leave with three beautiful creations, complete with plates to display them on.

With spring on the horizon, it’s time to shake off the cobwebs, cast off those winter blues and get creative.
I’d love you to join me at my home & studio in Oxenhope (Brontë County) where you’ll make your very own beautiful, spring wreath to hang on your door to welcome the season.

I will guide you step by step, starting with how to moss a frame, which will be the base of your wreath and then a detailed guide on placement, mechanics, and how to select the best natural ingredients, including an array of spring bulbs and the finest seasonal foliage.

There will be a choice of tea infusions, created with organic & foraged herbs by Retreat Remedies or fresh coffee if you prefer, of course, there will be cake plus lots of chatter and laughter!

The spring wreath workshops will be going live on the website tomorrow evening. There will 2 dates, Saturday 24th and Thursday 29th February.

I’ll post on my stories to let you know when they’re live, but you’ll need to be quick as spaces are limited and there has been lots of interest…there will be a link in my bio directly to the booking page.

We said goodbye to January yesterday and my goodness did it go out in style…mainly in the form of horizontal rain, driving bitter winds and fog rolling down from the moors.

In Yorkshire it’s called ‘wuthering’ and indeed it was!

[adjective: NORTHERN ENGLISH
(of weather) characterized by strong winds.
“it’s a wuthering day on the moors today”]

Yesterday was a perfect Monday, starting with another tea meditation with followed by workshop planning and then allowing myself some creative time with snowdrops.

With little else in the garden, these little drops of joy are such a welcome sight, whilst outside it was dark and dank with horizontal rain, inside was a completely different story. I lit the candles, got the fire roaring, and lost myself for an hour or so playing with these tiny blooms.

I don’t subscribe to the whole grim January vibe, if you go with the flow of the seasons there is definitely joy to be found if you look for it.

Just remember that in 12 months time January will be here again and there are a lot of January’s in a lifetime so don’t waste them, embrace them! Jx

Connecting to nature by bringing the outside in can help us in many ways.
It is beneficial to our mental wellbeing and can help increase feelings of peace & calm, it can help us emotionally, physically, spiritually, helping us restore balance and equilibrium.
With the weather in January being grim, to say the least, a simple pot of bulbs dressed with moss and twigs can bring so much joy, especially when you have created it with your own hands.
The great news is that once your bulbs have flowered, you can pop them in the garden and enjoy them for years to come.
Our new workshop schedule will be live next week; I can't wait to welcome you! JX

When the decorations have been taken down I love to start a bit of a cleanse and declutter, it brings a sense of peacefulness and calm to the house which I love.

With limited pickings available in the garden I love to have pots of bulbs and Kokedama dotted around to bring the outside in.

The Japanese believe that Kokedama can eliminate negative energy from your space, bringing peace and calm to help balance your mind, body & spirit.

In a few days I will be launching the first of my 2024 seasonal workshops, the first one will be Kokedama bulbs, translated as moss-ball bulbs.

I’d love you to join me! Jx
