A lovely day having afternoon tea The Savoy; a gift for my mother-in-law for helping us with our wedding last July.

Wedding Tip Tuesday (actually Wednesday now!) 🤍 DIY Guest Book

It is quite simple to make a rustic personalised guest book by buying a plain wooden notebook and brightening it up by sticking on some wooden shapes, laser engraved plaque and ribbon bought from Etsy. I recommend sticking them on using 3M Command Poster Strips for a mess free strong hold that will last for years to come.

My wedding had a songbird theme so I stuck on little birds and nests, and I added a Welsh lovespoon as my wedding was in Gower. There are so many different shapes you can buy to suit your wedding theme.

In the future, I am hoping to invest in a laser engraver and Cricut machine so that I can make wood guestbooks and many other wedding related items for my couples 🪵

Bridesmaids

As I am an introvert with autism I do not have many friends, so I didn't have the worry of who to choose as my bridesmaids. I had one bridesmaid (my sister), a junior bridesmaid and a flower girl (my husband's cousin's daughters).

For many brides this is a difficult decision and many feel they would upset their friends/ family if they did not ask them. Don't feel like you have to ask everyone and stick to asking your sisters, and very close friends that are friends for life. No one wants to look back on their wedding photos and have a bridesmaid that you are no longer friends with.

There are benefits and negatives to having lots of bridesmaids. One negative is that it increases the cost due to buying more dresses and hair and makeup. You also need to allow more time in the morning to get ready. However, less bridesmaids can mean less support on your wedding morning and during the run up to your wedding, so there is a balance.

If you want fewer bridesmaids don't feel pressured into asking everyone, do what suits you and not everyone else, after all it is your wedding day!

But if you want lots of bridesmaids go for it!

As I haven't introduced myself here for a while, I'm Hayley, wedding stationery designer & the owner of Sage Songbird Designs.

Having always enjoyed drawing, I was lucky to have had the opportunity to study a masters degree in illustration with Falmouth University, without having a university degree.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and OCD when I was 20, but have learnt that these conditions are not entirely a disability, as they have given me the gift of being able to draw. I have a strong eye for detail, I am a perfectionist & I can concentrate on the same thing for long periods of time.

I am vegetarian & have an Autistic obsession with birds & the colour green! My love of the natural world is often reflected in my designs.

I married the love of my life & my best friend, Robin, in July 2022, & designing all the wedding stationery myself inspired me to set up my business.

When I am not drawing and designing, I spend time with my husband and family enjoying walks, cooking, sightseeing, travelling, running and looking after my houseplant collection and rescue pet African grey parrot, Alfie.

Flowers - Simple or extravagant?

Me and my husband didn't want to spend lots of money on flowers for our wedding. We felt it is such a shame that wedding flowers get thrown away the next day. The guilt would be so much more if we had spent a lot of money on flowers, when simple flowers can look just as beautiful. We went for white roses, gypsophila and lots of greenery for our flowers, and kept them to the minimum. Adding lots of greenery is a great way of reducing the cost, and looks so lovely!

Whether you want to spend a lot or a little on flowers for your wedding, both will look just as beautiful if arranged by a good florist.

Using a local florist is also a plus as they are likely to know your venue inside out, ours lived just up the road from the church we were married in so she knew exactly how to make the best of the church space.
