It’s our first early music concert of the season tomorrow!

Sergio Bucheli (lute & archlute): Dowland, Kapsberger and Gaultier

Tickets are still available!

Following the success of our two concerts last year, we are introducing a series of ten concerts at our new venue, St Giles' Chapel, which is based at 38 St Giles’. For our first event, we are delighted to invite one of the UK’s most promising period practice players, Sergio Bucheli, principal lutenist of The English Concert. In this solo recital, which will be played twice at 4.30pm and 7.00pm, Sergio will perform Dowland, Gautier and Kapsberger on a 11-course French lute and an 14-course Archlute. Given the quiet calm and special acoustic of the chapel, this promises to be a very special concert indeed.

The Josh Sinton Quartet
Wednesday 24 July, 8pm

Josh Sinton - baritone saxophone and alto flute
Dominic Lash - double bass and electric guitar
Mark Sanders - drums and percussion
Philipp Wachsmann - violin and electronics

Brooklyn-based baritone saxophonist/flautist Josh Sinton has long been inspired by the specific and beautiful approach to free-form improvisation that has developed in the UK over the past sixty years. As an American, he can think of no better way of “paying it forward” than to make an evening’s worth of music with some of the leading lights of this aesthetic: violinist Philipp Wachsmann, bassist Dominic Lash and drummer Mark Sanders.

Tickets are £15 and will be available on the door on the evening of the concert.

Clara Schumann: Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, Op. 20
Robert Schumann: Waldszenen (Forest Scenes), Op. 82
Robert Schumann: Sonata no. 2 in G minor, Op. 22

Fischer-Dieskau comes to the JdP for a debut programme that couples substantial pieces by two leading nineteenth-century women composers, Mel Bonis and Clara Schumann, with two contrasting pieces by Clara’s husband, Robert. The music of the French composer Mel Bonis (1858-1937) is a key recent rediscovery. Her choice of seven legendary female figures for her piano pieces suggest an interest both in tragedy (Phoebé, Mélisande, Desdémona, Ophélie) and in tales of seduction (Viviane, Omphale and Salomé).
