Don't forget our D Day Beacons - tomorrow evening, Thursday 6th June at Pauntley Village Hall. Fish and chips from 6.00 p.m. and our beacon lit at 9.15 p.m. Please come and join us.
---------------------------------------------
On Thursday 6th June, beacons will be lit nationwide at 9.15 p.m. to mark the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings. It is our country’s opportunity to remember the 210,000 Allied casualties of Operation Overlord, killed in the invasions of Normandy’s beaches. It is also a celebration of the peace and freedom given to us through the bravery and sacrifice of those involved, and we will be lighting our own beacon at Pauntley Village Hall at 9.15 p.m. as part of this event.
The hall will be open from 6.00 p.m. and the Tudor Fish and Chip Van will be coming along on the evening as it is also National Fish and Chip Day, serving from 6.00 p.m., and we will have some music of the era. Please bring your own wine/beer. Tea and coffee will be available. If you would like to dress in clothes of the era, please do! We will also be grateful for the loan of any photographs/memorabilia.
Church bells are being rung nationwide at 6.30 p.m., including those at Pauntley Church, and we hope to be able to hear these at the village hall, across the fields, and will be asking people to maintain silence for a short period during the ringing.
We hope you will be able to come along and join us for this important event. Entry to the evening is free, but donations will be welcome on the evening for Help for Heroes, the charity supporting members of the UK armed forces and military veterans.

We thought you would also like to see the context of this event, in the words of the organisers.
Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR Pageantmaster of D-Day80, and of the 80-day countdown to June 6, 2024, says; “In 1944 Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed. Operation Overlord, D-Day, saw over 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 150,000 troops on the five Normandy beaches that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from N**i occupation. In order to commemorate the peace and freedom given to us through the bravery and ultimate sacrifice of so many thousands involved in the D-Day landings, and throughout the whole of WW11, beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace will be lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories - and in a very poignant and unique gesture, a special Lamp Lights of Peace lamps will be lit on each of the five beaches in Normandy, at 9.15pm local time that night, to coincide with the lighting of beacons at that time too. At 9.10pm, as night descends - and just before the beacons ignite - the resonant sound of bagpipes will be heard across the capital cities of London, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff. We will also have a presence in the capital cities of the Allied nations that took part. From Washington DC to the distant shores of New Zealand’s Auckland, from Ottawa to Paris, and from Canberra to Brussels, Athens and Amsterdam, Oslo, Warsaw, and Prague. The light from the flames from the lamps and the beacons will represent the ‘light of peace’ that emerged from the darkness of war, with the lamp providing a very simple, safe, unique and cost effective way of taking part in this important 80th anniversary occasion, especially as once used, can be lit again at 11am on every Remembrance Sunday thereafter, in tribute to the many millions that sacrificed their lives during WWII.”
