I had the loveliest of days earlier this week at a workshop hosted by and talking about sustainable funeral flowers. Sustainability is a concept close to my heart and upping my sustainability level is something I strive to do in all of my work. Recycle and re-use is my moto and while I feel like this is becoming more accepted in floristry as a whole, my opinion is that funeral flowers are the last piece of that puzzle. Having flowers at a funeral is a widely accepted form of commemorating a love one, and for some an important step in the grieving process. Yet, in the UK, over 90% of funeral flowers are made with single use plastic, and pollutants that seep into our water ways. What happens after the funeral? The flowers are discarded at the back of churches and crematoriums, ready to be shipped to landfill where they will never fully break down.
Let’s change the rhetoric on funeral flowers. Let’s make them not only a celebration of life but something that can then be taken home to continue the celebration or divided up between family and friend so everyone can take something home in remembrance. Whether it’s opting for a wicker coffin, or eco flowers or just something that’s compostable and can be returned to the earth in a beautiful 360 moment. There are lots of options.
Let’s spread the message and start a conversation on how we can make the process better.
