The 2nd Earl was a distinguished diplomat serving as British Ambassador to the court of the ill-fated Louis XVI of France.

Although he hardly lived at Scone himself, his influence is strongly felt in the Drawing Room which is filled with treasures he brought back with him from Versailles.

And of course no 18th century British Embassy was complete without full-length portraits of the monarch of the day.

It's not just maintenance inside the palace that goes on during the winter season 🌳

This week, tree surgeons attended to one of our most historically significant trees—a sycamore believed to have been planted by King James VI of Scotland in 1617.

Over time, the tree has lost branches, causing structural imbalance. To preserve this extraordinary piece of history, we’re carefully working to rebalance its weight with minimal intervention, ensuring it remains a cherished feature of the Scone Palace Gardens for generations to come.

Our Story

Located on the edge of the City of Perth, Scone Palace has an exciting and colourful history and is one of Scotland’s most important stately home. Discover the rich history when you walk in the footsteps of our ancient ancestors and stand where once 42 of our Scottish kings, including Macbeth and Robert the Bruce, were crowned on the famous ‘Stone of Scone’ also known as the ‘Stone of Destiny.

Within the Palace visitors will find an outstanding collection of antiques, paintings and rare artefacts as they walk through the State Rooms where their knowledgeable and friendly guides are on hand to answer any questions. You can enjoy one of their famed ‘scones at Scone’ when the visit the coffee shops, including the Old Kitchen where you will find the original Victorian cooking range and a selection of copper pots line the walls. A wonderful selection of quality Scottish gifts and produce can be found in both the Food and Gift Shops.

The vast grounds in which the Palace sits, rich in their own magnificent history. The famous plant hunter, David Douglas began his career as an apprentice gardener at Scone Palace and is home to one of the first Douglas Fir’s planted from seeds he sent home from North America. Be sure to explore the Murray star maze which features a mixture of Beech and Copper Beech hedging.
