Brendan Jamison: In-Between 7 Feb - 29 Mar 2008

MCAC is delighted to present ‘In-Between’, a new body of work by young Northern Irish artist Brendan Jamison. The work has been specifically created for the MCAC Gallery 2 space. Employing the primary colours of red, yellow and blue, the show features three large-scale wool sculpture installations, directly interacting with the space.
The theme of ‘In-Between’ is explored through the use of space. A yellow spiral staircase connects the floor to the ceiling; a blue wool bridge rises up and stretches across the centre of the gallery; and a curving red wool tunnel.

The artist employs wool for its warmth and tangible quality, with its therapeutic healing qualities offering non-violent associations. As an artist Jamison is constantly aware and engaging with the visual and psychological effects of colour and form on the viewer. This technique breaks down many of the academic notions that can at times isolate and distance people from contemporary art. This is also a major role MCAC plays as both a Gallery and Art Centre in its belief that art is for everyone and altering perceptions of art.

We had a great evening on Tuesday hosting the celebration event for the members of the Ulster Project Delaware group in Portadown.

In this project young people from both Protestant and Catholic backgrounds, were involved in a cultural exchange programme with teens from Delaware in America. These young people participated in a range of peace building activities to create friendships and promote the importance of the acceptance of diversity and inclusion.

Well done to all the participants involved in this project! 👏

Opening event: Saturday 6th July at 2pm

This exhibition is an expansive retrospective on the work of Northern Irish artist Jordan Howe. Howe's work encompassed themes of identity, femininity and surrealism, often presented within pop cultural references and visual culture.
Working in mixed media, primarily painting as a visual artist, Howe was also heavily involved in music production and composed many original pieces. Her work was widely recognised and respected amongst her peers and she was both technically ambitious and unguarded in her evocation of emotion within her theatrical and decisive body of work. This retrospective is a celebration of the
life's work of Jordan Howe.

Mark McGreevy: A Gap In The Bright 6 Dec 2007 - 26 Jan 2008

MCAC is delighted to host ‘A Gap in the Bright’, presenting new work by young Northern Irish artist Mark McGreevy. ‘A Gap in the Bright’ is the first project in Beneath the Painted Surface, a series of three exhibitions that investigate the liminal (i.e. thresholds, boundaries and borderlines) and subliminal elements in the medium of painting and curated by Megan Johnston. Three Northern Irish contemporary artists have been selected because their practice engages with these issues. Through these exhibitions, MCAC aims to provoke contemplation, dialogue and debate about the formal readings of the painted surface — colour, line, perspective and narrative. We will also engage with the artist to incite deeper examination of painting in historical, modern and post-modern eras.

📢Calling those from the border counties of Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Monaghan & Cavan📢

📌Border Talk 4 – Expression of Interest

Storytellers of Ireland in partnership with The Armstrong Storytelling Trust have recently launched a joint cross border storytelling project called 'Border Talk'. Funded by the International Fund for Ireland (IFI), the project promises to deliver cross border, cross community storytelling events and training programmes to promote the tradition of oral storytelling and in turn develop a network of storytellers who can deliver cross-border events, leading to increased cross-border activities and reconciliation amongst border communities. The border area is a unique landscape with a rich heritage in the oral tradition of storytelling.

We invite expressions of interest from anyone from the border counties of Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Monaghan & Cavan. This EOI seeks to establish a group of participants from these counties in a bespoke storytelling training program, leading to a National Open College Network (NOCN) Level 2 Unit in Oral Storytelling skills for performance.

If you are interested in taking part in this course, please complete the Expression of Interest form by close of play Monday 1st July.

You will find the link in the insta bio above or follow https://forms.office.com/e/iZj59zx1Xe

Name: Senga Sharkey

Exhibition Pieces: Making Memories and More Memories

Senga is primarily an abstract artist who loves the process of painting. She isn’t usually concerned with having a particular image in mind when starting her work, rather allowing the paint, random collage, and free drawing to lead in an intuitive way as she builds up layers of paint, paper and other media. Senga’s inspirations and interests are varied and any of her life experiences, good and bad, can make their way into her paintings. She is increasingly digging deep and painting from memories, feelings and hopes. Senga primarily seeks an emotional response from viewers, who can draw on their own feelings and experiences, and make what they will of her work.

🎨 𝑨𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔! 🎨

Name: Sara Fox

Exhibition Piece: Support Me Before I Fall

Sara Fox is a painter of people and places who expresses her interpretation of the world through her practice. This understanding is a window into how she perceives and is influenced by her environment. She was brought up in a country in a perpetual state of flux, creating uncertainty and unbalance. This tension is rooted deeply in her subconscious and has emerged as a critical theme in the subjects she chooses to work with. Her work reflects her ever-changing circumstances and is her way of trying to unpick them. Everything leads to the realisation that dialectical relationships push her practice: high art vs craft, manmade vs natural, new vs old, modern techniques vs traditions, health vs illness, Belfast vs itself.
