Nice email landed in my inbox this morning! I received formal notification of my 'approved' status from the Society of Virtual Assistants - yay!

I've been a community member of the SVA for over 2 years but applied for approval when I launched my business earlier this year. They are the 'go to' place for anyone thinking of becoming a Virtual Assistant in the UK. Their aim is to raise, inform and maintain the standards of VAs. They have clear rules and criteria that all in our profession should adhere to and offer no-nonsense guidance to support us.

A very happy New Year to all my friends, colleagues and connections.

Well, 2021 has been quite a year for all of us, I’m sure you’ll agree.

For me, it’s been a year of change – there’s been some big ones, change of house, change of job (twice!), becoming a secondary carer to my mum. Some changes I had to roll with but the job changes, I’ve decided to do something about – to take control of my working life.

The word ‘redundancy’ is enough to send a shiver running down most people’s spines and even though I knew it was coming, I still went through a mixture of emotions when it happened, anxiety, worry, uncertainty, to name but a few. They say that when ‘one door closes another opens’, don’t they? so, I decided to take the leap into running my own Virtual Assistant business to be my own boss, be in control of the ‘what’, ‘how’, ‘who’ and ‘when’.

I’d been toying with the idea for a few years, as I love working from home and being in control of my day so the dreaded ‘Redundancy’ gave me the proverbial kick up the backside to finally get started.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been an organiser/a planner, someone who loves to solve problems – hence embarking on a career as a Personal Assistant where these skills have been tried, tested and proven.

I’ve always had a great sense of achievement in enabling others, be that through optimising an Executive’s working life, simplifying a workflow or delivering a service.

For me, what makes a great Personal Assistant is not just working for someone but building trust, an effective, close-knit partnership, like pair programming; a collaboration. So the overall outcome, for both you and your business, is better than if either of you worked alone.

Over the years, I’ve worked throughout the UK, in Italy and the Middle East, worked for the NHS for over 8 years. More recently, I supported a team of orthopaedic surgeons in the delivery of a data evaluation programme, working with an international team to underpin patient safety initiatives.I’ve also been involved in delivering COVID-19 testing solutions, sourcing products and managing staff rotas. I also worked with a major media company providing bespoke, on-demand testing for their C-Suite Directors, often at very short notice! Outside of the healthcare arena, I’ve worked in many diverse industries, including Finance, Recruitment, Education, Construction, United Nations, Hospitality and Events. The benefit of a transferable skillset means I can easily fit in to any industry.

In a nutshell, I’m service-orientated and am passionate about helping people – making a difference.

I have taken the leap into running my own VA business to utilise and maximise my skills and experience whilst having the freedom to be able to work flexibly and remotely from my home by the beach in Wales.
