So here it is, the ‘big’ reveal…… (I’m so rubbish at this, it’s totally not my bag this social media stuff) this is where you will find ruby ruth’s country barn which opens on Friday at 10am. So many lovely things to buy all under one roof and services to book too. More detail to follow…..

So why ruby ruth’s country barn? Well it’s been well documented previously that rrb was started from some money left to me by Mum and Dad, and my love for Mum’s wedding bouquet. So Mum was the daughter of an arable farmer and they lived at High Barn Farm which is still partially there in the most beautiful Wiltshire countryside.

So a barn was the natural progression for me when expanding my business and this one sits in a beautiful setting, it was a real no-brainer for me!

Good news! So I’m now back from holiday and moving on with some changes… ruby ruth’s bouquet has expanded and will be part of my new venture, ruby ruth’s country barn. Not only will you be able to buy your flowers as usual, you will also be able to buy plants and natural dog treats (Barrow at the Gate and For the Dog), reserve your place on the many planned workshops (including our ever popular Christmas wreath workshops), get your doggy advent calendars and buy goods from other invited vendors plus so much more! Opening date/times and location details to follow……

Tomorrow the Cooper clan are off on our (very much needed) annual beano, all 14 of us! We will be gone for just a week (leaving the dogs and house in our very capable sitter’s hands) but when we return we have very exciting news to share regarding ruby ruth’s bouquet, the Barrow at the Gate and For the Dog! TIP FOR TUESDAY!

If, like me you love a Gladioli or two but they’re not open enough for you, then just pinch off a segment or two at the top. This forces the lower flowers to open quicker, the next day you should see a marked difference!

Sometimes as a florist you are asked to produce something for a recipient going through the most terribly tragic of situations. How do I start it? I rely on gut feeling, experience, flower and sundry knowledge and just thinking ‘what would I like if it were me….’ Feel with your heart and act accordingly and you won’t go far wrong….

So a picture of Ruby herself who would have been 95 today. Ten years ago (almost) she passed and left me some money to start my business and here I am still here some 7 years later. I think she’d be pleased with how ruby ruth’s bouquet has progressed and grown. Hopefully within the next few weeks I will have some news to share that I just know she would enjoy…..

TUESDAY TIP!

When you’re looking for maximum impact go all out - striking colours, plenty of differing textures and lots of fragrance. In this birthday bouquet there were all of those… the spiky yellow Rebel Eremures, the brain-like Celosia and the oh so fragrant Matthiola, Mint and Rosemary… a real assault on the nose!

I don’t usually put personal posts on my business page but feel I need to explain why I’ve been so quiet and have put so few posts on here in the last few weeks. My time has been spent with my eldest brother, Dave, a kind and gentle bear of a man who passed away on Wednesday. He will be hugely missed by so many people whose life he touched, he helped and encouraged so many, giving his time freely. I’m so proud to call him my brother……

Just had to show you today’s delivery for The Barrow at the Gate. First up these oh so colourful Hydranga By Nature mix. They quoted me to expect 3-5 heads, only one has four, the rest have 6+! Wrapped in a natural and pretty brown paper sleeve these would make a lovely gift at just £7.50 each!

Next up is Digitalis White Panther (Foxglove). Expected to grow to 40cm they won’t need a huge amount of room, plant them in a sunny or partial sunny spot and the cut flowers they will give are just beautiful. £7.50 each.

Last but by no means least, the very colourful and ethereal Cosmos Bipinnatus ‘Apollo Lovesong.’ Expected to grow to between 60 and 80 cm they should be planted in a full sunny spot. With foliage that pretty the flowers are a bonus! These are just £3.50 each.

TIP FOR TUESDAY!

If you’re fortunate enough to receive some of this wonderful Lucky Bamboo it may come with or without roots. If it’s without, cut across the stem at a 45 degree angle and place in a few inches of water. It will start to regrow roots. You can either choose to grow them in water ( keep the water level just above the roots) or plant into a pot. They may be grown outside but need to be brought in as the weather gets colder. If you’d like to give this a try, drop me a line or message me and I can order some in for you. Happy growing!

TIP FOR TUESDAY (but on Thursday because I forgot!)

If you have difficulty in making your flowers stay in position you might like to try this method…. Take some tape and stretch across the top of the vase to make a grid…..Don’t worry too much about the edges as they will be covered by the blooms…. Place your flowers in the spaces, the tape will support them and you can change them around without disturbing the remainder of the arrangement…. Continue placing your flowers keeping an eye on the rim to ensure the tape is covered from view…. And voila! All done! I used florist’s pot tape but pretty much any tape will suffice. Happy flowering!😂

A fitting birthday graveside tribute from a daughter and a granddaughter to their Mum and Nanny. A shared love of snowdrops prompted this pretty basket, underneath that moss there’s a whole host of white grape hyacinths just waiting to push through and finished with a circlet of Ivy it’s just as natural as it can be….

When you’re working on a large piece and it’s cold both outside and inside you need to keep moving and motivated…. What better to bop round the kitchen to than Freddie and the boys…

As the Summer fades and we look forward to Autumn and all its colours…. This morning’s delivery has been added to the Barrow at the Gate… beautiful Rosa Jewel Red, Platycodon Astra White and Campanula Blue at £2.50, £1.50 and £1.20 respectively. We still have some Violas (£1), Pansies (£1) and a few of the White Christmas Cactus (£1.50) but they are in demand so please let me know as early as possible if you’d like any. Thank you

When the weather is as hot as it’s been recently you have to pick the coolest room you know… whichever it is. I was asked to include wood in this tribute and used a hollowed out trunk as the base. Flowers included Rosa Alpe D’Huez, Rosa Avalanche, Clematis, Senecio, Ledervaren, Ruscus, Gentian Blue, Globe Echinops, Veronica, Chrysanthemums, Gypsophilia, Hypericum, Salal and Cocculus. I loved the natural look….

The barrow is now fully loaded with plenty of colourful plants, a fair few of them in red, white and blue. My favourite has to be the hanging basket, called Calibrachoa Hangpot Lollipop priced at just £7.50, I have only two and they come complete with a cover to protect them. The flowers of the Calibrachoa are small petunia like and love to sprawl. We also have the Lavandula Edelweiss (white), some Black Satin Petunias (very lush!) and the beautiful vivid blue Lobelia…. Only 18 remain…. Delivery is available if required.

It’s taken me five attempts to get this video made, we have work going on so it’s timing it between the noises! So this is the first of what is available for Mothers Day:- Inflated and weighted helium balloons £5 each Cards £1 each Dried flower pomander balls £10 each, wrapped in toning tissue with a bag and ribbon to finish Clip on Butterflies £1 each.
