Safe spaces being a predominant concern, Iota Events is organising safety buddies via the Reading Q***rs For Palestine (RQ4P) group chat. If you need an es**rt to a place of worship or walking home at night, if you need a safe space to vent and be actively listened to with empathy, we are here.
As a person of colour, I am scared but lucky to have the protection of my wonderful boyfriend. I don't trust the police at all to protect the refugee, immigrant, asylum seeker and PoC communities, there aren't any local organisations I can recall that have made serious and rounded committments to protecting PoC lives (i.e. ones run by people with white privilege and influence who should be doing the work to protect us, rather than PoC), so hopefully by organising this we can protect each other.
A worrying number of people voted Reform in Reading UK so there is genuine cause for concern. Nigel Farage has been inciting racial hatred. People voted with hate and fear in their hearts. I walked through Reading town centre today and saw incredible ethnic diversity, which means plenty of people are at risk. I am so worried for the lovely old Indian ladies I saw chatting on a bench, the families with gorgeous young children, the happy people laughing and shopping in their hijabs. With the situation with global genocides, the global oppression and suffering of people of colour, the racists being funded by Israel...we need our community more than ever.

I may be smiling in the photos, but there's a lot behind it. Recently participated in filming for a Consent Conversations documentary as part of Reading Pride committee, which is a project run by Thames Valley Police aimed at 18-24 year olds to educate them on consent. I shared my advice, my lived experience as a female person and a drag performer.
Have experienced more consent violations in my life than I can count on my fingers, limbs and toes. I was very apprehensive about being involved with the police. They are the ones arresting P4lestin3 activists. They are the ones who would implement punishments on behalf of the govt if/when laws were/are targeting the LGBT+ community e.g. conversion therapy for trans people is legal, perpetrators aren't being arrested. Due to being a witness in a past life, the police are a major PTSD trigger for me which can be disabling at times. And very importantly, how LGBT+ and black people are treated. I deeply comprehend all of this.
However, they are providing a platform for an important conversation and I took full advantage. It was my privilege to share my story, to potentially help young and lost people entering similar situations as me. That I experience life as a brown woman due to my biological gender and race being permanently entwined. The issues faced in the drag scene. To highlight that survivors don't have to report the people that assault and abuse them if they can't - it's valid and I believe you. To bring to light that everyone I love has been sa'd. That men also experience sa and they deserve support, respect and validation.
