I find it as exciting anticipating the next blooms as enjoying the ones in flower. Next will be the late summer zinnias, cosmos and China asters. And, of course, the dahlias.

At this time of year when the plants are growing quickly and the weather is somewhat unpredictable, it can be really helpful to get some plant support in place early doors. To be honest, this is the first year I have been ahead of the curve instead of either trying to retrofit netting to fully grown plants or berating myself for not getting around to it!Pictures show 3 types of supports - netting attached horizontally to hoops, cylinders made out of pig fencing and string between fencing stakes. The first can be used for most flowers and you can use two layers of netting 30cm apart for taller plants. The second two are both for dahlias. The cylinders have worked really well in the past but you have to find somewhere to store them when not in use. So I am hoping the string will do the trick. 🤞🏻

Flowers for a local event - at the venue and in the studio. About 90% of the flowers were from the walled garden and we had a lovely afternoon creating all of the floral loveliness. A relaxed, fresh from the garden vibe. Thanks to our lovely customer and, as always, to without whom this wouldn’t be nearly as much fun! Get in touch if we can help you with flowers for an event or special occasion.

The coffin topper was on an entirely compostable base. Bamboo canes, bamboo plates, twigs, moss, jute string and a compostable bin bag to keep the moisture in. It all worked well. Thanks to Mr B for lashing the bamboo canes together. It’s always good to get an engineer involved. It was sturdy.

Bright, British garden flowers to celebrate the life of a colourful local lady who loved her garden. It was a huge responsibility but we enjoyed creating displays which we thought she would have liked. Couldn’t have done it without as always.

It’s been a bumper order week for Friday Flowers. And I’ve spent this morning doing a bride’s bouquet and a button hole for a small wedding tomorrow. This time last year I was just starting to sell flowers and Heathside Flower Garden was just getting going. Thank you so much to all my customers, old and new, and to all my other supporters and cheerleaders. I have loved meeting all of you - both virtually and in person. I have a feeling this will be a fabulous, flowery year!

The garden is beginning to pump out the blooms. Ranunculus and tulips and lots of other little bits and pieces. This is the first time I have managed to get a real crop of ranunculus - it took a bit of effort to nurse them through the icy weather but it has been worth it. Don’t forget to order some Friday Flowers - ready-to-arrange bunches, table-ready jars and bouquets. Some flowery joy for the Coronation weekend. Www.Heathsideflowergarden.com.

A wonderful day in the garden and the greenhouse. Over-wintered perennial and annual seedlings have been potted on. New seeds sown - early but not outrageous. All under the watchful eye of one of my garden companions. It has been a tough couple of weeks chez Brady but I am energised for the year ahead.

On this last day of 2022, I wanted to say a big thank you to all my fabulous customers and to all who have encouraged me as I began my flowery enterprise. I have loved the connections I have made and the people I have met throughout the year. I have learned a lot and can’t wait to do it all again but better in 2023! Thank you for your support ❤️.

I held my first wreath workshop last night. It was such a lively and jolly event. All my guests made beautiful wreaths and went home to start the festive season by decorating their front doors. Looking forward to the next week of happy wreathing!

Yesterday it was dry and I finally got round to planting the tulip bulbs. A slightly different approach this year. I have dug out one of the raised beds and back-filled over the bulbs with compost. This should make it easier to harvest the bulb with the flower to get the longest possible stem length and longest life in the vase. Swipe along to see the makeshift barrier to the cunning squirrels.

It’s been a busy week in the garden, in between down pours. Clearing, planting out hardy annuals and digging up dahlias. And lots going on in the greenhouse too - seedlings, dahlia tubers and a bed of stock that I hope will flower early with the tulips - which I haven’t planted yet😬!

Some beautiful Ammi Major which flowered for a month or so from mid- June. I only got round to clearing the bed a few weeks ago. In the second picture you can see how successfully it had self-seeded and today I pricked out hundreds of tiny seedlings to give the plants enough room to flourish. Ammi is a hardy annual so with a bit of luck it should survive the winter in the shelter of the walled garden - but I will grow some in the greenhouse just in case. Autumn is the time when we show our faith in nature and begin our preparations for next year. I love it!

Christmas wreath workshops are live for booking on the website. Starting with just a few dates to see if anyone is keen. Wednesday 23rd November and Thursday 1st or 8th December. Festive refreshments, a wood- burning stove and great company! Hosted in the flower studio, between 6 and 8 participants per workshop would be fabulous. If you would like your own bespoke session for a group of friends, colleagues or clients send an email to [email protected]. Visit www.Heathsideflowergarden.com for more information.

I am very proud to grow seasonal British flowers, to arrange without floral foam or plastic film and to bring the joy of fragrant blooms to my lovely, local customers. There are lots of alternative suppliers of flowers - over two thirds of flowers sold in the UK are sold by supermarkets. Large home delivery companies are growing quickly. I am grateful for the customers who choose me and support British grown flowers. While I don’t like to criticise the competition, I am surprised at home much greenwashing is out there. P if you want to find out more, visit the grid of the wonderful who has been investigating greenwashing in the flower industry- a lot to think about!

Isn’t nature amazing? I love the detailed repetition in a flower form. And the exquisite colour. And the fragrance. But I wouldn’t grow them if I wasn’t also adding back to our local environment, creating a haven for pollinators and other insects and wildlife. Locally grown flowers may not always last 10 days but if you refresh the water and snip the ends regularly, they could last up 7 days. All of the beauty, none of the miles. All of the fragrance, none of the chemicals. See our website for more details. Www.Heathsideflowergarden.com

A happy Sunday. This is the bucket of flowers I picked this morning as I listened to a podcast. Followed by a quiet hour in the studio tidying and creating. And then the blooms I will be taking for one of my besties, who is hosting a Football Final get together. What could be better?

Flowers for a local corporate event. The client didn’t want statement wedding-type flowers but a floral decoration which reflected their brand colours. We cut the right palette of colours from the flower garden and supplemented with blooms from other British growers. By using large jam jar arrangements the client’s team members were able to take the flowers away with them at the end of the event. Such a lovely client and an enjoyable commission.
