Friends of Christ the Consoler

Friends of Christ the Consoler A unique name for a unique venue It was the Parish Church of Skelton cm Newby until 1991. It is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Christ the Consoler Newby Hall was built in the early 1870's in memory of the son of Lady Mary Vyner of Newby Hall who was killed being rescued from kidnappers in Greece. The Friends of Christ the Consoler is a charity with two key objectives. Firstly, we bring life to this beautiful place through events including music, theatre, and services. Secondly, we raise money through events to deliver key

projects such as re-commissioning conservation heating to protect the stained glass windows and restoring the special Lewis organ which is virtually untouched since 1875. Come visit - always open. Find us near the entrance to Newby Hall. Postcode HG4 5AE

When our village primary school was closed in 2023, we were upset. We could not have been happier when Little Pippins Montessori Nursery opened in September. They have embraced being in our gorgeous village and Christ the Consoler Newby Hall has become a firm favourite for walks. Today they held their nativity, and there is arguably no better place for it. The parents and grandparents enjoyed a superb performance in this beautiful setting. (Photo from a rehearsal visit).

We were delighted to welcome the new MP for our area (following boundary changes), Sir Alec Shelbrooke MP who took time to come and see both the beauty of Christ the Consoler Newby Hall but also hear about how we are bringing this building back into the heart of the community through events and services, whilst addressing the challenges of the Church’s conservation for future generations.

It was so lovely to welcome 200 people to our Festival of Lessons & Carols today. A special thanks to Bishop Clive Handford for leading the service, John Sayer our organist, and our two choirs The Collavoce Collective and Eurythmia Ensemble led by Catherine Field-Leather. Also our Readers, Peter Greenwood, Andy Hynd, Shanie Robinson, Ruby Booker, and Richard Compton. Finally, to our support team from parking to bar.
We look forward to continuing our exciting journey in 2025, of bringing life to this extraordinary building through events and services, and working with the The Churches Conservation Trust to preserve her for future generations.
Happy Christmas to all ❤️

This may come as a surprise on a damp day like today, but the sun is still up there … and as it sets this evening (Weds 16th October), we invite you to join us at 6pm for a short service of Compline, the traditional close of day for the monks. It’s a gentle reflective service held in the family seats at the front of Christ the Consoler Newby Hall. A lovely way to both end the day and enjoy this beautiful and peaceful place.

It was an absolute treat to welcome 120 people from the local community and further afield, joined by many members of the farming community as we gathered to be led by Bishop Clive Handford in thanking them for everything they do to bring our food to the table. We were joined by the lovely choirs of the The Collavoce Collective and Eurythmia Ensemble, accompanied by the amazing John Sayer on the organ. The church looked stunning having been prepared with gorgeous displays. And, of course, no celebration would be complete without tractor and sheep!
