Introducing our organist for our spooky concert and Nosferatu screening this weekend 🎹🧛🏻‍♂️👻🎥

Aaron Hawthorne is a sought-after silent film and concert organist from North Lanarkshire, Scotland, with a Master of Arts degree in Music from the University of Glasgow. He performs regularly across the UK, Europe, and the USA, known for his
engaging organ recitals and silent film accompaniments.

Aaron began his career at Motherwell Cathedral and has served as a principal organist in several churches. Since 2017, he has been a house organist at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow.

His passion for theatre and cinema organs started in his teens during a visit to Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom. In 2019, Aaron won the Young Theatre Organist Competition in New York after winning the UK title earlier, and later received the Ian Sutherland Award for his promise as a theatre organist. He is active in organ preservation societies and is also an accomplished choral conductor and Arts Development Officer for North Lanarkshire Council.

Aaron has completed three UK silent film tours, performing classics like “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925), “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”(1922), and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”(1923) earning praise for introducing new audiences to silent films and the pipe organ’s unique sound.

Have you got your free tickets yet for our Powerful Poetry and Panel this weekend?

Centering around Rochdale’s historical involvement with fighting for abolition in the 1860s during the Lancashire Cotton Famine, historians will uncover the people and their poetry behind the town’s radical history.

In collaboration with Manchester-based poets, this panel shows how creatives continue to use their voices to fight for change today, using poetry in protest and advocacy. In bringing history to life, this panel event aims to ignite vital conversations and inspire creativity during Black History Month
rennie.14

The panel follows the release of the Weaving History podcast in June 2024, a miniseries uncovering the forgotten working-class poetry from the Lancashire Cotton Famine (1861-1865). Episode 5 of this podcast took listeners to the Cotton Famine Road in Rochdale, interviewing local residents from the Rooley Moor Neighbourhood Forum. This panel seeks to expand the story of the podcast and bring Rochdale’s radical history to life through connections to modern poets.

🗓️Sunday 27th October
🕰️3-4pm
