I do love a chrysanthemum. Not all of them — just a select few. This year it’s the Balcombes that have really caught my eye.

White, lavender and bronze. They’ve been growing in the glasshouse, and they’re new this season. Full of character, a little late to the party — blooming just as everything else on the field starts to slow down. Me included.

I’m curious though — do chrysanthemums feature in your autumn work? If I grew them at scale, would you want them? Your thoughts will really help me figure out if they’re worth pursuing next year.

Drop a comment — I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A bowl of chrysanthemums and echinacea gathered from the field — the last glimmers of beauty before the season turns.

Snatched together at the kitchen table between half-term days, garden projects, planting and clearing. Nothing styled, just the simple joy of making something from what’s left.

I could have waited for the perfect moment, but perhaps this is it — the imperfect one, full of life, colour, and everything that matters most.

Always a little late to the party, but she’s worth the wait — the much-loved Café au Lait.

She can be a handful, this one. Grand in stature, generous in petal, and not always the easiest companion for a bouquet or a vase. But give her room to breathe and she rewards you with all that soft, creamy beauty she’s known for.

This year I experimented with tighter spacing, hoping for slightly smaller blooms — the universe, however, had other plans. I’ll try again next year, and continue my quiet quest to find the perfect Café au Lait–coloured dahlia, but with a smaller flower.

Has anyone found her? If so, I’d love to know her name — and where she came from.

Sunday at the field.
Half term is looming and there’s plenty to do — moving and splitting perennials, re-jigging beds, and making a start on the bulbs that seem to be arriving daily.

I keep threatening to lift the dahlias so I can get them dried and tucked up in vermiculite, but they just keep flowering — I couldn’t resist picking these few to bring home. Dahlias, nicotiana, cosmos, snapdragons… it’s amazing how much beauty the field still holds.

The winter lull is on its way, but for now I’m simply enjoying what’s left — the flowers, the colour, and these softer days before the season turns.

A little flower play on Sunday.

It’s amazing what’s still flowering at this time of year — soft butter-yellow roses, Hannay’s lemon drop, delicate toadflax, salvia, nepeta, phacelia and asters in gentle shades of lemon and lilac. The late afternoon light was fading, casting a quiet, gentle gloom over everything. The season is slowing, but the beauty isn’t over yet.
