John Clifford!

I am known as Fire Phoenix Rising, a passionate poet who proudly embraces my triple D’s: dyspraxia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia.

My journey with dyspraxia began in my primary school years, where it went undiagnosed until my mother discovered an article about a dyspraxic child and recognized the parallels in my experiences. This realization shed light on my challenges with social cues and coordination, which have often made friendships more difficult and resulted in moments of clumsiness.

At the age of 19, I received diagnoses for dyslexia and dyscalculia, and I am now on the path to obtaining a formal diagnosis for them as well. Writing poetry has been a powerful outlet for me, enabling me to articulate my emotions and experiences. Although I was initially unaware of my talent, I have since won competitions and earned funding to film and record my work.

I am deeply committed to raising awareness about disability, homelessness, and women's equality. It’s an honor to serve as one of the judges for the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower 2022 poetry competition, themed "Getting Around - Invisible Disabilities and Me." I look forward to contributing to this important conversation!

John Clifford is a writer and performer who adores poetry.

A spoken word storyteller, he has shared his work in venues around the UK ranging from castles and cathedrals to cafes, clubs, pubs and favourite friends' kitchens.

His poems have been displayed in the streets and shops of Manchester’s Northern Quarter for National Poetry Day, produced in collaboration with alt pop duo Iris Lyre, broadcast on BBC radio, and were performed at Cheltenham Literature Festival in 2022, New York Poetry Festival in 2023, and Allen Valley Folk Festival in 2024. A Mind Over Matter national slam finalist, the last year has seen him featured in six cities and three festivals across the UK.

The best of his notebook scribbles were published in his first collection Tell Us What We Are with Written Off Publishing in 2023.

1 week tonight!

Spot light on guest poet:
Steve Mingle

Steve is a retired actuary turned football author who first trespassed into spoken-word world in
2019. His favourite pastime is swearing at strangersand he’s been delighted to discover that if you do it from behind a microphone then some people will call it art. Steve’s output so far comprises seven books about Manchester City together with a recently released poetry anthology, More Poems About Rucksacks and Phones. Amongst this collection’s visceral rants and absurdist humour can be found traces of gentle nostalgia together with affectionate tributes to some of his heroes. However, any temptation to suggest that he’s going soft in his old age should be strongly resisted.
