You’re in for a treat with 3 fabulous guest poets, take a read of their bios below…

Linda Downs is a northern poet who performs at open mics in Greater Manchester and beyond. Her first collection Cuckoo comes out next year.
Linda’s poetry is a perfect blend of comical, profound & eye opening.

Shaun Fallows is a Wigan poet born with cerebral palsy. Real and raw, expect potholes, speed-dating and Amsterdam in this exploration of disability, relationships and travel.
He will be touring his new book ‘Redundant Butties’ which defines what it means to grow up as a working-class man and wheelchair user today. Our hearts are not desolate, just the tyre tracks are muddied.

Kate Hook () is a lactose-intolerant cheese addict originally from Wythenshawe, who only moved to Sale because it had better cheese.

As a “fairweather feminist” who lives in a house full of boys, she can frequently be found dodging bath and bedtime by attending poetry nights and comedy gigs.

Her first poetry book “I Can Hear You Ironing” came out in March, and takes a tongue-in-cheek look at parenting, politics, and the toxicity of online comparison culture.

Kate is performing at Rotherham’s Women of the World (WOW) Festival in May, and is scheduled to appear on popular poetry podcast “Spoken Label” in early June.

Sale Write Out Loud takes place on the 3rd Monday of every month at Sale Waterside Arts Centre. Located directly opposite Sale Tram Stop.

Tonight's stimulus for you to respond to in your own prose poetry:

The Time I Was Mugged in New York City
I told people that the travel sickness pills
made me stupid. I entered JFK with a red
suitcase and no one to greet me. A man
came up to me, dressed in black. I found
myself in a car park by an expensive van
and he was holding my luggage. Get In, he
said. There wasn’t a single thought in my
head. I found myself inside his van; he
locked the doors immediately after; made
me switch my phone off as we went under
the bridge. We spoke about Niagara Falls.
He chose the narrowest roads in the city,
a needle making a joke out of Manhattan.
When he pulled up outside Grand Central
station, he said – don’t get out, there are
bad people around. He made me unzip
my suitcase, books and bras spilling over
the seat, and give him all my money. Then
he helped me out of the van like I was a
princess; he held my bags like a vassal and
kissed my cheek. Get In, I hear whenever
a man pushes me too far; Get In to my big
black car. Sometimes in my dreams, I am
sitting beside him on the leather; I don’t
need to be ordered and together, we drive
with melodious speed over the East River

She has won first prize in several writing competitions, including Bath Flash Fiction and the Mairtín Crawford Short Story Award, and has placed or been listed in others including the Bridport Prize and Aesthetica.
She has performed her work at many spoken word nights in the North West, and as a guest of For Books’ Sake at the Edinburgh Fringe.
She loves stories that feature wayward teens, middle-aged women who’ve had enough, and the darker sides of suburban life. She is working on her first novel.
When she’s not writing, she likes watching creature features, dancing badly to Britpop, and hanging with her daughter, dog and husband

She has published a poetry collection, A Dinner Party in the Home Counties, which won the 2019 Word Masala Award and a short story collection, Mrs Pinto Drives to Happiness, shortlisted for the 2022 Eastern Eye ACTA Awards. Her new novel, Still Lives won the 2023 Diverse Book Readers’ Choice Award and is longlisted for the 2023 Peoples Book Award.
Reshma’s work has appeared in anthologies and journals, and commissioned by the BBC, University of Cumbria and Manchester Literature Festival. She is the co-founder of The Whole Kahani – a writers’ collective of British South Asian writers. Born in India and brought up in Italy, her writing explores the preoccupation of those who possess a multiple sense of belonging.
