The flowers have slowly come to an end now and wreath making is just around the corner. This year we are running two workshops in East Grimstead and another with Hazel Hill Wood on the edge of the village. All foliage from the village and nearby. You will have a chance to create your own wreath using a variety of foliage so that you have something festive to hang on your door and also the chance to meet up with others for a festive and creative time.
Please contact Littleford Farm Flowers for more details.
Workshops:
3rd December at Hazel Hill Wood where you can forage for foliage in the woodland before settling down to make your wreath.
9th NOW SOLD OUT and 10th December in East Grimstead Reading Room where I will provide foliage from my field.
All 10am - 1 pm with tea, coffee and cake.

I haven’t posted here for a while so here is a little update.
This summer the weather was very unpredictable but the extra rain really helped our shrubs and flowers to establish themselves. We had a wonderful crop of dahlias from July through to October when we had our first frost rather earlier than last year. Lots of bouquets delivered and events flowered with our natural, seasonal and locally grown flowers.
Now looking forward to our winter wreath workshops in December. Info on this to follow…

The winter months at Littleford Farm are usually quite still as everything pauses and we really need that time to reflect and rest. It’s lovely to see the energy return though as winter turns to spring.

The last two months have been busy with bouquets, lots of new dahlias this year that came in to their own late in the season but were worth the wait. Now truly in Autumn as we come to the end of this year’s flower season at Littleford Farm.

Summer days. This week has been hot and sunny, perfect summer weather. Great for haymaking - the grass has been cut and is now drying in the sun with a gentle breeze. The flowers are moving into their July colour scheme and the roses and smaller more delicate flowers create that light and summery feeling to the bouquets. Soon we will have sunflowers and dahlias which will add a completely different dimension.

Very hot sunny days at the field. The sort of summer days we dream about all through the winter. Lots of flowers to make up our mixed bouquets. Here are some of this week’s offerings.

I’ve just realised it’s been a while since I posted on here. A busy few weeks. The daffodils are still flowering - into their fourth month now. We’ve had a few tulips but not many as the voles have spend the winter munching on them. We are now into May and the Allium, Sweet Rocket and Lilac are bringing a swathe of purple to the field. Some photos from the last few weeks…

One of the first flowers at the field, the hellebores are looking amazingly resilient with the crazy weather coming at them from all around and the first daffodils are budding up ready to flower in the next few weeks. There may be wind, rain, broken branches and glass today but beneath the ground (and above!) spring is getting ready…

How did I get here? It has not been without its challenges so there’s a lot to be said for saying ‘oh well’, and carrying on!
Six years ago I had to wade through a stream and walk 10 minutes across mud country to even get to what is now the flower field. We put in a new gate and things got a little easier. We then needed big fencing as we share the field with a small herd of Roe deer. The heavy clay had been pasture for as long as anyone can remember so we worked hard on creating flower beds with lots of local compost and now use the no-dig method for new beds. It still wants to revert to pasture so there’s always a bit of a battle with grass encroachment and wire worm but we manage this all by natural methods. Then there are the voles and mice who are currently munching through my tulips - hopefully some will grow - I’ve already realised they are not the best crop for the conditions out here.
It’s a journey to get to the summery photos of beautiful flowers but the foundations and work we do through the year pays off and we have beautiful, cared for flowers grown naturally alongside wildlife and the sun shines and the flowers grow.

No day at Littleford Farm is ever quite the same and new challenges are always being thrown into the mix. Some days we focus on the plants, making sure they have the best chance of doing well, either caring for young plants in the greenhouse or out in the field where they need weeding, compost topping up and gently watering when necessary. Other days we will be cutting and arranging flowers for buckets and bouquets, usually cutting in the evening or early morning to ensure the flowers are fresh and in the best condition. Our days change with the seasons, more watering and mowing in the summer and more general maintenance of the field and greenhouses and fences in the winter. Whatever time of year, we try to make time for a tea break when we get a chance to catch up and meet local friends who drop by. I often work on my own with just the birds for company so it’s great when there are others around to share it all with.

This week, I have been posting about our story on Instagram as part of the challenge. Here is the first post.

Happy New Year. Good to be back after a midwinter break. Its time for the challenge to help me remember what I do!
So, this is me. I'm Susie and together with my lovely team of occasional helpers, I grow the flowers at Littleford Farm. I came into flower farming sort of by accident. I had worked in educational and heritage settings for most of my career combining my love of archaeology, art and teaching. After moving back to the Salisbury area to help care for my Mum, an opportunity to take over a field came up and I was persuaded to grow flowers by my landscape designer sister and horticulturalist friend Diana. I loved arranging flowers but only had limited experience growing so with Diana's help I learned as much as I could and set up a growing space. I'm still learning every day, its been a gradual process, introducing new plants, shrubs and trees and finding out what I like growing and what the heavy clay soil is happy for me to grow. It's now a way of life, in fact it has a life of its own that carries me along sometimes. No going back now.

Some of this year’s wreaths. We have only used foliage from the field and village to make our wreaths - even the hay for the ring came from here too. Very much a creation, green on many levels!

Here I am amongst my flowers before the stormy weather. I have been growing a range of annual and perennial flowers on our family field for the last five years. We use organic methods to produce our flowers and foliage and provide a home for a wide range of wildlife and plants at our field.

This week, we have been busy with the flowers but also finding time for camping at the field and having a small gathering for friends of Littleford Farm. Good to have a little time to reflect and enjoy these warm September days.

A bucket of our flowers on their way to the Veg Shed at Manor Farm, East Tytherley. Donnally Bettis grows fabulous veg with no pesticides or herbicides and works with nature in a very similar way to us. It’s great to be able to collaborate with another local grower and we look forward to supplying the Veg Shed with our flowers. Lockerley Estate
