Finished! Much of the work goes into the inside of a wedding dress, so here's a photo of the innards of my August bride's dress (main pic), as well as the finished outside and a close-up of the heart detail.

Two weeks before the wedding, the first and final fitting of my August bride who lives 185 miles away! I admit I was a little nervous as we haven't been able to do in-person fittings because of the distance, but all was well - phew!

While I was with my lovely bride, I finished the neckline and pinned the hem and we decided on the sleeve design. I think the short sleeves really suit the Grecian style of the dress. I love the silvery trim too. Credit to the bride, who designed her own dress. All I have to do now is a bit of finishing before the big day.

My August bride lives in Wiltshire so we have done measurements and toile fittings by Zoom and post - where there's a will there's a way! These photos show: the crepe dress fabric draped on the stand to give the bride an idea how the bodice will look; toile #2 in green fabric; the b***d underbodice and the dress partly made up.

It's been a while, but here's my latest creation! I'm really into short dresses at the moment - they're modern and sassy and suit brides of all ages. The use of just one or two design features, such as in this dress, gives a certain understated elegance (in my opinion!) which I just love.

I have created these hand-made decorative mini mannequins, priced at £28.50 each. They would look lovely on a dressing table, either on their own or as a jewellery stand for necklaces, bracelets etc. They would also make an unusual but useful pin cushion for sewing enthusiasts! I have four so far and more in production. I can also make to order. Each one is individually made by me (with a tiny bit of help from my husband and his electric saw skills 😊). The outer fabric is 100% cotton, stuffing is polyester and the stand is spray-painted wood. Total height is 28 cms (11").

The bride's own ideas and my own suggestions came together to create this ivory silk dupion fit-and-flare gown, featuring a cross-over neckline overlaid in lace and edged with beading.

I chose to make this dress in ivory Supreme Duchess Satin as it works so well with the classic, simple lines of this style. The fabric has a subtle sheen and drapes beautifully. The dress has good structure to the bodice being fully lined, interlined, and a b***d foundation bodice. The concealed back zip contributes to the unfussy silhouette of this dress.

This is my own design, based on the Regency period. Created in Supreme Duchess Satin and fully lined, this dress features piping around the neckline, armhole seams, waistline and sleeve hems. Self-covered buttons with loops fasten the bodice and sleeves. The satin has a beautiful drape quality and slight sheen. It is a soft almond colour.

About me and what I do

I am a wedding dress designer and dressmaker based in Sandwich, Kent. I grew up making clothes for myself and in my 20s completed a college course in fashion design and pattern cutting. During my studies, I worked for a dressmaker in Tunbridge Wells where I honed my couture skills and later started my own dressmaking business.

Some time later life took over and dressmaking took a back seat, until I married Paul in 2017. As an (everso slightly!) older bride, I wanted a wedding dress that was understated but elegant, and took the opportunity to design and make my own dress. In doing so I rediscovered my passion for creating beautiful garments, and now specialise in wedding dresses.

I describe my style as ‘classical elegance’ and all my dresses are one-offs or very limited editions of a design. They can be modified to suit individual tastes too! My designs are inspired by periods in history, famous icons, and sometimes pure whimsy!
