The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
As you are probably aware 2022 is the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. A group of enthusiastic local individuals and organisations have come together to look to organise some events to ensure Sawston takes a full-part in the celebrations planned for the Queen’s Jubilee year.
The purpose of the group is threefold:
• To arrange and promote some events ourselves
• To encourage other individuals and organisations to host their own events
• Promote all local events that celebrate the Jubilee through our own web-site & social media activities
We are of course concerned about the Queen’s recent poor health but we feel we have no option other than to continue with our planning. In any event some form of celebration of the Queen’s reign is likely to be appropriate this year. The COVID situation is also a factor but again we need to continue our planning and be flexible enough to adapt to the regulations appropriate at the time.
Early indications are that local people are very keen to support events to mark the Jubilee.
Nationally Jubilee events are taking place throughout the year cumulating in a four day Bank Holiday weekend at the beginning of June. In starting our planning we have considered the official activities being planned for the Queen during this weekend. These include:
Thursday 2nd June Birthday Parade – Trooping of the Colour
Thursday 2nd June Lighting of Beacons – Evening
Friday 3rd June Thanks-giving service at St Pauls
Saturday 4th June Visit to the Derby
Saturday 4th June Concert at Buckingham Palace – Evening
Sunday 5th June The Big Lunch & The Platinum Jubilee Pagent
We have planned a schedule of local events to loosely tie in with the Queen’s activities, these include:
Thursday Lighting of a Beacon, Sawston Parish Council have kindly agreed to stage a Bonfire & Firework display on Huckeridge Hill. As this is a summer event The national Beacon lighting is scheduled to take place at 9.15 pm.
Friday The opening of displays of the entries in a painting/photographic competition to be run in conjunction with local artists and schools. The displays will be exhibited in local public spaces for all to view
Saturday Daytime – Festival of Sports & Activities. Local Sports clubs & activity organisations will be encouraged to hold events at different locations throughout the day.
Saturday Evening – Open air popular music concert at Spicers Sports Ground. Local group, Spree have already agreed to play.
Sunday Family Picnic at Spicers Sports Ground with light entertainment and fun activities for all the family including the judging of our own Platinum Pudding Competition.
We are also hopeful that other events will be taking place during the weekend, these include:
• Our local Church Groups working together to plan their services and activities during the weekend.
• Events at Mary Challis House & Garden
• Sawston Cinema running a Jubilee themed mini film festival
• Our local British Legion Branch holding a commemorative event or parade
It has also been suggested that it would be nice to produce a Sawston Jubilee Souvenir similar to the mug produced for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
We are also being encouraged to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy Project by planting some trees. Planting season is October to March and we will be working with local groups to see how we can contribute to this project.
You will have seen recently details of the Queen’s Platinum Pudding competition where you can submit your recipes for a special pudding to be served at The Big Lunch. If you would like to enter this national competition please visit the Fortnum & Mason website www.fortnumandmason.com
Some of the activities we are planning will incur some costs we are therefore currently planning some fund raising events to be held over the next couple of months, please watch out for details of these and support us if you can.
In the coming weeks we intend to contact local organisations to see if they wish to be involved with our Jubilee planning. We are a small informal group so we would love to hear from you if:
• You would like to know more about the activities we are planning
• You would like to help plan and/or run our events
• You are part of a group or organisation that is planning, or is thinking about planning, to hold a Jubilee and would like to know more about how we can help promote your event.
