Three weeks ago we were lucky enough to view the Van D**e imitation of Daniel Mijtens Portrait of Henrietta Maria (Charles I's Queen) which depicts Henrietta in the blue silk riding attire shown in the 1630 portrait of the couple "Departing for the Chase". This is one of the most fascinating aspects of recreating a historical costume based on a portrait, the detective work in tracking down paintings, contemporary copies, accounts, wardrobe inventories and other sources. Frequently court painters would invent fantastic outfits for their subjects, however in this instance every indication suggests that this was a real garment (now lost) which we had the pleasure of recreating.

For our final post of 2023 allow us to introduce her Majesty Maria Theresa Holy Roman Empress and ruler of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Milan, Tuscany, and the Austrian Netherlands from 1740-1780. A capable and fiercely independent ruler, she practiced riding aside in her coronationation regalia to secure the support of the Hungarian Diet.

It was with great shock and sadness that we received the news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s passing last week, and it is impossible to adequately pay tribute to a monarch who for 70 years demonstrated unswerving duty to the people of Britain and the Commonwealth. To reflect the national period of mourning we present our Victorian mourning dress which is steeped in symbolic public representations of grief and loss.

A Victorian Lady’s day dress of a style common in the 1860s. This example is almost entirely made of printed silk with simple accents and fastened with hooks and eyes.
