Pefkin is performing at Bishops House, Sheffield, Friday 12th Dec, opening for Thomas House (Sweet Williams)
Here's a Review of PEFKIN's gig, last week in Newcastle.
"Pefkin, conjures up whole worlds with the simplest of sounds, and it’s utterly transporting."
What's not to like?
" incorporating elements of folk into something more experimental, summoning up something special from a simple palette.
Pefkin – aka Gayle Brogan – explained upfront that she’d be performing three new pieces uninterrupted, the first two from a new album due next year on Morc called Unfurling. Using a viola, a tabletop of loop and effects units and some heavily treated vocals, her set was a brooding delight. Green Bound In Ice & Snow was bucolic and immersive, conjuring up mist-shrouded hills and moonlight, while My Breath The Sea used deep, cycling tones and some unnerving effects to suggest a quiet alarm, the sense of something malevolent in the woods, reminiscent at times of Musick To Play In The Dark-era Coil. Gossip In The Leaves employed mournful viola with lots of crackle and grit from the tabletop, building to doomy chords and overdriven FX and fading out to the sound of crows. Pefkin’s music is so deeply evocative, bringing to mind strange happenings beyond the door, a kindly neighbour with a dark secret."
