Did you know wallflowers smell of honey? Now you do! It's a beautiful day for a coffee and bouquet at . The season is really kicking off now and we are back to 100 percent locally grown, pesticide free, happy flowers. I only buy in British flowers in the winter, but it's good to know these are local. You don't usually need to put wallflowers in a polytunnel but it's been an experiment which has paid off. Enjoy.

Today I planted out larkspur seedlings whilst listening to a podcast about 'Queenagers' and the power and hope of the over 45s! It was brilliant and reminded me of my other take home from the flowers from the farm conference. Women are ace! It's taken me a while to come to this opinion as I went to an all girls school and that was a hard era. Academic competition and 'the patriarchy' meant that the sisterhood was still some way off. I was wary to say the least but this mid section of life is an absolute revelation. The room was filled with awesome predominantly older women talking about collaboration, networking and business. I am still fan girling Georgie Newbury hard (best example of awesomeness, high energy, entertaining, articulate), but it got me thinking about the other lovely ladies I have met through the medium of flowers .and.flowers . Super fab, fun, ladies. Running businesses, looking after little people and doing all the things.

I needed a day just to sit very quietly and digest all the things I heard and learnt at the flower farm conference. To distill the gold dust from the many talented and varied business experiences. I have a tendency at times to be headstrong, but there is a dangerous romance to flower farming that can lead you onto the rocks. It's about picking my way through my thoughts and finding out where my own hard lines sit. Where's the balance between productivity and my own ethics. For example, I will not use permanent landscape fabric for paths. I know it's inefficient to mow or w**d, but I use the grass clippings as a compost accelerant and I don't want the microplastics on my soil. I am with on deplasticing my farm. Also if it's good enough for Georgie it's good enough for me.

For the same reason I will not use green waste. If it has toothbrushes in and plastic pieces, it has microplastics. There's a terrifying piece of research showing microplastics can pass into growing plants, fruits and vegetables. It is not our responsibility to make a market for unclean waste streams. The price of plastic does not represent the harm it does to the environment. It is not for farmers or gardeners to take your blue paper sludge, sewage waste or your 'compost' unless you can prove it is microplastics and forever chemical free, inert and will enhance the soil. I have been burned here before using 'ECO' recycled tyre rubber for a horse arena, which is toxic. Check your compost! Where is it from. How is it made?

I use horse manure as my bed amendments and lots of livery yards pay to get it removed or just burn it.

Recycling plastic releases microplastics at every stage, can compound some of the dangerous hormone disrupting chemicals (which is why I won't buy recycled plastic clothes thanks ) and at the end of the process, it's still plastic.

A thought experiment from Roisin's talk is, if in this post 2 degrees world we are hurtling towards, I need to flip my flower farm to food production, is it ready? Is it clean?

Not much work will be getting done on the plot this weekend, but here's a friendly reminder to feed the birds and put out some warm water. The bird food shelf at Tesco's had been stripped so I know you are gooduns! ❤️
