A couple of favourite snaps from the ’s Beyond The Bassline exhibition this week demonstrating the monumental impact immigration to the U.K. has had on the world

Some super interesting and inspiring history lessons on the evolution of black British music from as early as the 1500s to the Jazz movement in the early 20th century that shaped and shifted into reggae, Lover’s Rock, and sound system culture which later morphed into the hard and fast genres like garage, grime and jungle which the UK is recognised globally for today

Who knew Fela Kuti started his journey out in London whilst studying here all those years ago?

Or that to this day, the only female instrumentalist with a UK #1 single was an immigrant, Winifred Atwell, who went on to inspire Elton John to name just one

We back out here!

This August we’ll be returning to We Out Here Festival for our 5th consecutive year since the festival started.

We Out Here is truly one of the best festivals around and one that we resonate with probably more than any other, with a weekend full of live music and phenomenal DJs from all walks of life and cultures and getting to see half the artists we’ve booked over the years with your best mates.

We’re heading to Once In A Blue Moon again this year on the Sunday night at 20:00 if you’re around. This year’s extra special as our resident Marcelo flies in from Germany for a b2b with Román after years away from our parties in Sheffield & Leeds and closing out the festival together in 2019, 2021, and 2022.

We’ll be joined by Sheffield crews with Phon-etics Sheffield and a Mondo Radio takeover featuring Alex Aubyn, Smiley Maxx, Ashley Holmes playing across the weekend too to top it off plus man like Ashley Grimshaw who’s mix just dropped on My Analogue Journal 🎉

See you there! ⛺️

10 days to go until we head back to Factory Floor for our monthly live sessions, this time with the one and only Mim Suleiman!

https://ra.co/events/1919198

Mim Suleiman has been described as Mama Africa of the modern era, but also defies categorisation. A boundary crossing performer, she reaches deep into her East African heritage to blend traditional Taarab vibes with dub, jazz, soul and funk.

You’d be pushed to find Mim play in such an intimate spot as Factory Floor’s after countless performances around the world and a impressive back catalogue of collaborations with the likes of Damon Albarn, Paul McCartney, Amadou & Mariam, Kano and more. Let’s have it!

La Rumba bring Mim Suleiman live for a super intimate and exclusive performance you won’t see very often in Factory Floor’s 100-cap space. Mim Suleiman...

10/06/2024

Now the dust has settled from last Friday, we’ll be back at The Leadmill again this time next week for our annual link-up with Migration Matters Festival for their headline event with the legendary Mali duo, Amadou & Mariam!

We’re genuinely so grateful to be a part of Migration Matters Festival and everything it represents. As two immigrants ourselves from Venezuela (Román) and Brazil (Marcelo), we’ve always taken immense pride in sharing global culture through music by bringing artists like Dele Sosimi, Channel One and more to Sheffield over the years, but Migration Matters Festival has taken this ambition to a whole other level for the past 7 years.

Every third week in June during what is known nationally as Refugee Week, Migration Matters Festival ‘Britain’s largest festival about Sanctuary and refugees in the country’ (The New Internationalist, 2017) returns to Sheffield in a festival that creates a platform to champion the voices of people who are so often muted, pigeon-holed into labels and rarely genuinely offered a chance to shape the cultural and artistic landscape of the cities they live in.

The festival’s central aim is to “bring together all the people of the city, all Sheffielders to recognise each other, and to see people not for the labels that divide us, but for the unique talents and skills that make us who we are.”

Our previous collabs with the festival saw Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 take Foundry by storm two years ago and Sauti Sol broke MigMat’s record for their highest attended event last year at Leadmill. We’re expecting no different this year with people expected to travel across the UK to catch Amadou & Mariam’s extremely rare appearance in the United Kingdom at The Leadmill on Monday 17th June.

Joining the duo, we’re super excited to welcome one of our favourite local artists, MYNA, back to MigMat x La Rumba after supporting Seun Kuti in 2022 ❤️

Whether you’re joining on Monday or not, make sure to check out the full festival programme which kicks off on Saturday 🎉

Set times for Friday night at Hope Works!

We’re gassed for this one. Tomorrow sees the first link up between La Rumba x Apricot Ballroom after years of throwing some serious parties across just about every venue in Sheffield between us.

The Apricot Ballroom DJs open up the warehouse before Luka Una and Crazy P take centre stage. Residents of all three parties, Román, Nonna Fab, and Joi La Frique then go toe-to-toe to round things off until the sun comes up

Doors open at 23:00 so get down sharpish and soak up the vibe. This one’s going to be up there with one of our best.

La Rumba: Nubiyan Twist ft. Aziza Jaye, corto.alto

We’re thrilled to have the NT crew back in Sheffield off the back of their mega album launch, Find Your Flame, after hosting their previous two visits to Sheffield at Foundry and Peddler Warehouse.

We’re on DJ support between the bands and are super stoked to finally bring corto.alto to Sheffield. They are some of the hottest musicians around right now led by Glasgow’s mastermind, Liam Shortfall.

There’s a handful of tickets left online which will save you a couple of quid on the door so act sharpish to avoid missing out.

Less than a week to go now until Franz Von and his crew hit Factory Floor for a very special intimate set on a late spring evening.

https://ra.co/events/1846608

Expect high energy hip-hop afro fusion with Mondo Radio's Dan G supplying the vibe before and after the band.

Franz Von is best known as the high octane emcee of much loved afrofusion kings K.O.G. & The Zongo Brigade and jazz fusionists TC & The Groove Family.

A well established artist now introducing his electrifying hip hop afrofusion ensemble. Blending live drums, keyboard, MPC, and bass guitar with his lyrical prowess. Bringing together their diverse musical backgrounds, the 4 piece have created a dynamic high energy show.

Franz Von's blend of Jamaican dancehall Mcing, classic boom bap hip-hop rap style and his band's live energy has endeared him to audiences around the UK.

Housing previous support from BBC Introducing Sheffield and Amazing Radio who handed him a one-off show, as well as BBC Introducing at Radio 1 and DJ Target at BBC 1Xtra, Ministry of Sound, Naga Mag, Word Is Bond, Groovin’ Mood, and more. Franz Von is a Jamaican-born, UK-based artist exploring traditional cultural lineage from Africa through to modern genres. After 8 years playing with K.O.G and the Zongo Brigade, Franz Von has collaborated with the likes of Tony Allen, Onipa, and Wiyaala. Following the success of pre-released singles ‘Her Frequency’ and ‘Power Be You’, his latest EP ‘PEOPLE DI POWA’ has arrived just in time.

01/05/2024

Ahead of our final ever show at Wire this Saturday with O’Flynn, we share some of our favourite moments from over the years in our second home from Sheffield.

We’re still a bit lost for words that our favourite Leeds venue will be closing after 18 solid years bringing some of the best artists of modern times up North, 5 years of which we’re immensely grateful to have been a part of.

Our first party at Wire was in 2019 on a Wednesday night with Bellaire right before he took off. We put tickets up for £1-5 thinking nobody would come down mid-week then sold out in an hour, so it was only a matter of time before we were back on the train skiving Uni to host Esa soon after, before branching out to Wire’s sister club at HiFi to host Romare, Auntie Flo, and CAIN.

We hosted Big Miz in 2020 just 11 days before lockdown and the venues’ doors closed. After countless hours nattering on the phone with their in-house booker over lockdown about what might be left of the scene in a post-Brexit, post-Covid world, we hosted some of our favourite parties to date with DJ BORING & Reeshy, Moxie & OK Williams, Jay Duncan & one of our all time favourites, Midland in the same club he cut his teeth in back in the day.

It’s been 15 long months since our last club appearance in Leeds with O’Flynn and MYNA due to the ongoing struggles facing the industry right now, so wrapping up our Wire shows with O’Flynn again this Saturday will be quite the bitter sweet end.

On a more uplifting note, we’re now just 3 days away and tickets are moving fast, so act sharpish to join the action for one last dance at Wire x

✨Artist spotlight: SNO✨

Announcing our next headline guest for our daytime party on 5th May with O’Flynn and DISCHI.

https://ra.co/promoters/74108

Another familiar face at La Rumba, SNO is one of our favourite guests and artists that we’ve met through this game, with an electrifying personality on the dance floor just as much as behind the booth.

You’ll find her traversing genres from around the world with unique records that you’ll never have heard twice before alongside certified afrocentric classics from legends like Ego Taylor, Amadou & Mariam, and Fela Kuti that had us hooked from the first time she played for us in 2020.

Our final support artists announced next week 👀

23/04/2024

✨Artist spotlight: Call Super✨

Call Super is the primary moniker of Joseph Richmond Seaton, a DJ and musician from London who has carved out his own place in the landscape of electronic music. Defined by a meticulous approach to the composition, production, art direction and presentation of his work, every release encapsulates Joseph’s idiosyncratic vision. It is a colourful world that gives life to the shadows and throws a mist over the boundaries that have become so commonplace in electronic music.

Call Super is truly one of the most impressive selectors we know that has left us with a sense of joy, fulfilment and shared excitement for dance music every time we witness his magic in action, many times over at home in Hope Works and further afield over the years.

He joins Peach, O’Flynn, SNO and more on Sunday 5th May in less than 2 weeks time for his long-overdue return to Sheffield.
