The structures of Hellebore Flowers fascinate me , whilst , of course , being utterly beautiful π .
These Flowers are on the same Plant , just at slightly different stages of development π .
I love how in pic 1 , the reproductive structures start off tightly packed together , with the anthers surrounding the styles in the middle , while the Flower itself , nods its head to protect these structures π .
Then in pic 2 , the anthers are releasing pollen , ready to coat the bodies of pollinators who go down to those green nectaries at the base ; they are actually modified petals , and the petals we see and love are modified leaves ! Which is why they don't fall off once the Flower is fertilised and forms seeds ! π
Pic 3 shows how the anthers gradually release and come away , once their pollinating job is done , how utterly fascinating π .
.. and that's why Hellebores with seed-pods can be more upward facing and can last so long once cut (if You can bear to) ! π
