Spencer Wood Carnival :The 17th Spencers Wood Carnival went off without a hitch at the weekend with crowds still gathered on the field at 9pm.

The rain stopped just as the event opened and the sun shone for the rest of the afternoon, bringing residents out for all the fun of the fair.

Having missed three years because of Covid and then the death of HM The Queen, last year’s event was the first for a while – and this year saw an even more impressive array of activities to attract the crowds.

The carnival, at Clare’s Green Road, had John Coneley’s Funfair including dodgems and sideshows, a licensed bar, hot and cold food for all tastes, local groups and societies and live music. There was also hands-on art, Circus Scene, clown shows, a dog show, crafts, stalls and a disco.

Organiser, Debbie Johnson said: “It was an amazing day and the people of Spencers Wood really turned out to support us. It’s all about bringing the whole community together and helping community groups to fundraise and be more visible.”

The event gets a small grant from Shinfield Parish Council to help towards costs. Any money left after expenses is divided between the local charities with a small amount set aside to help towards next year’s event.

The whole day is pretty much run by a group of four or five people but Debbie admitted they could do with some extra pairs of hands on the day next year.

And with the carnival coming of age next year as it turns 18, there is sure to be a real party vibe. Put the date in your diaries for Saturday 20th September.
