🎉 Exciting News 🎉

👰‍♂️ The Wedding Law Reform has been discussed in Westminster! Siobhan Baillie raised the question which specifically included independent celebrants 💘

“After extensive work and consultation, the Law Commission submitted its final recommendations to the Government in July 2022. In this document, they propose moving to an ‘officiant-based scheme’, whereby the person conducting the wedding would be authorised, rather then the venue in which the wedding takes place”

I’m so excited to see what happens in the near future!

🧹 Jumping the broom 🧹

This ceremony is said to date back to the 1700s and was used as a marriage rite for those whose beliefs prevented them from being married in the eyes of the church.

Traditionally a besom (type of broomstick) was used and either the ceremony was performed over the broom or the broom was jumped after the ceremony, the idea is not to touch the broom as this can signify bad luck or invalidate the marriage, the broom could be on floor or at an angle in a doorway, jumping backwards could annul the marriage.

Couples choosing this ritual may do so to pay homage to ancestors, they want an alternative to anything religion specific or as an inclusion of significant others, ie the purchasing/decorating or providing of the broom. The broom goes on to be a keepsake or maybe even a family heirloom one day.

💕 Sand Ceremony 💕

As ceremonies moved outdoors the sand ceremony became an alternative to the unity candle ceremony as there is no worry of a breeze extinguishing the candles.
This ceremony traditionally involves three colours of sand, one as a foundation, one for the bride and one for the groom, the foundation sand is poured into one container/vial, with the couple adding their colours, representing the joining of their lives.
This container/vial can then be corked and kept as a reminder of their commitment to one another or even displayed as an ornament.

The sand ceremony can be extended to additional family members and more colours added to symbolize the blending of families, each colour has a meaning and can be selected in that way or alternatively can be selected to match the wedding theme colours.
It’s a lovely way to involve children particularly if they are from previous relationships as it is a display of their family unity and exciting for them to be included in the ceremony.

🕯️ Unity Candle Ceremony 🕯️

Traditionally the mothers of the bride and groom light a candle each that sit either side of the main unity candle, these burn throughout the ceremony with the newly married couple then taking each candle to light the main centre candle together to represent joining both families. 🤝

To include children, family or friends in the candle unity ceremony, each person would have their own candle, the first person from either side of the table would light their candle from a tea light and then each person will light the next persons candle, once all candles are alight all parties will light the unity candle together. 💕

. ❤️ Handfasting ❤️

The tradition of handfasting is an old Pagan custom dating back to Celtic times.

Traditionally this ceremony would take place 1 year 1 day prior to the couple marrying and was seen as a betrothal ceremony.

Not only is it a nod to tradition, it’s fun and a perfect visual way of showing and sharing unity with those attending.

They can be structured to include family / friends and different coloured cords / ribbons can be used to signify different meanings.

Handfasting ceremonies, can be beautiful and fun at the same time. 🎀

❤️ The Love Letter Ceremony ❤️

✉️ Love letters are date back to the 1700’s and were seen as an introduction to courting, whilst men were more forthcoming than women the idea was that once writing to one another courtship had begun and marriage was on the cards.

The love letter ceremony has Icelandic roots and entails the couple writing each other a love letter, below are some ideas to get your creative mind working.

· How you felt when you met.
· Your favourite adventure together.
· How much you have grown from then to now.
· Your feelings as you anticipate your wedding day.
· Your wishes for your future together.
· Your promise to him/her.

The parents or someone with a close relationship to the couple may also write a letter, these can then be sealed into a keepsake box, along with a bottle of wine if so desired. The idea is that the box remains sealed until an agreed date ie.. 1st, 5th,10th,25th wedding anniversary or if the couple face hard times it can be opened as reminder of the reasons they fell in love and decided to marry.

The letters are best written on acid free paper as this will last for longer. The letters and wine if chosen would be placed and sealed in the box as part of the ceremony, this can be with a lock or even nailing the box closed. A decorative box would be a nice keepsake that could be displayed as an ornament as a reminder of the couples special day.
