We had a landmark moment this week when our first “beasts” arrived to Broughton Sanctuary.
These Iron Age Pigs take us to the next stage of our rewilding journey and it feels like a wonderful milestone in our work here.
It was an incredible summer’s evening and a true joy to see them setting off into the distance.

There was so much excitement here @broughtonsanctuary when our trail cams captured this!
Still considered as rare, in recent history otters were close to extinction in Britain, but the banning of pesticides, improvements to their habitats
as well as legal protection has led to an optimistic resurgence.
These cubs will stay with their mother for a year before finding their own holt, so if you sit quietly, you might spot this gorgeous little family.

Just a year since we were admiring the storks of Knepp Wilding and only daring to hope that one day we might host our own, yesterday a glorious white stork was spotted in the fields near the hall.
The next measure of success would be to see if they will choose to nest and breed in our trees, so please lovely stork - stay a while!

We are pleased to report that Broughton Sanctuary has identified 39 species, with several key indicator species present. The Red List - which includes our most endangered species - had entries for the Spotted Flycatcher, the House Martin, Swift and Tree Pipit, all of which are of conservation importance. This, the first of our reports, provides a wildlife baseline against which future bioacoustic surveys will be measured against.
